Playing Zion in the bubble was a mistake

To be very clear, Zion is our most important player by far, and is our franchise.

With that said, he left the bubble after just a week of practices, didn't play in any of the preseason games and came back out of shape.

Yeah, I know it was preseason games, but we looked good beating the Bucks in a game where Giannis played regular minutes. The team seemed to have a rhythm. Enter Zion and his "burst minutes" restriction and that rhythm went out the window with a quickness.

At the very least, we shouldn't have played him until the FO/coaches felt comfortable with him playing regular minutes.

We fricked all of this up.

Zion’s presence wasn’t why the king’s guards both went 30+ points, why Clippers went off from 3, and why the jazz beat us. Cmon man

Him playing or not playing those game, the results would have still been L’s

No the NBA allowing Alvin Gentry in the bubble was a mistake. But being serious we should have know we was going to be even worst on defense when Jeff, and Jamelle opted out of going to the bubble.

It messed up everything on defense, because the other guys couldn't count on Zion to be in position.

Please tell me who would have taken his spot and improved that defense more? BI? No... Melli? No. Favors can barely play 24 minutes a game and has also played like dog shite. Nothing would have changed the results of those games if Zion played or not

Like Bunch said maybe a new coach would have changed it

He's only played 35-40% of our minutes in his four games. The defense has been crap for many minutes when he's not out there.

Except we probably beat the jazz if he had played 1 extra minute late in the game

I would just like to know why he left the bubble. There has been nothing regarding why he left in the media (good job by the FO), but, I’m just curious

No, Zion being a professional athlete and not being able to stay in shape is the mistake.

Can we plz realize he's only just turning 20!!! It's took legends longer to get into pro mentality... Let's give him sayyyy maybe at least half a season worth of games before the complete tear everything down/i give up/fire everyone melt. Ur never going to find a championship team in their young 20s! And the whole core of this damn team is just that. Y'all are expecting 2 much 2 soon!! This young team has the makings to be something special just give it some time. Year 1 of rebuild isnt the time to expect the world. Y'all sound ridiculous

Have you watched us play defense? Lonzo and BI have been absolutely miserable. I watched BI give up straight line drives to Rui last night and make Harrison Barnes look like a top 10 iso player in the league two nights ago. Jackson Hayes’ communication on pick and rolls has been miserable. Favors is playing 8 feet back on pick and rolls. Seriously, until the middle of the third qtr against Washington, our defense, outside of Jrue at times, has been as bad as I have seen and you are blaming a guy who is playing 20 min a game?

I couldn’t disagree more with the OP. Griff treating Zion like a piece of glass doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have played. The only way Zion is going to get better defensively is through experience. There is also the crazy philosophy that the more basketball he plays, the better shape he will be in.

Jesus. You people have the dumbest opinions sometimes.

This season was never about how far we would go in the playoffs. Most of us didn’t realistically think we’d even make the playoffs.

Getting Zion experience matters a HELL of a lot more than making them without him.

I wouldn’t say he came back out of shape, clearly he arrived out of shape

And these two are very skilled defenders. It’s the coaching and style of play that makes them look bad. We need a new coach, plain and simple.

Which is why some of us are very concerned

Weight and conditioning shouldn’t be something you struggle with at 19 and 20. If you do, that could be a nightmare when you actually start aging

Which is why he needs to lean these lessons now. To play through it. To see what not taking care of himself can do. To see what he could be if he did.

To fight through adversity. To spend weeks with dedicated Vets like Redick and Holiday.

Nothing is more important than Zion’s development. Everything else is secondary.

He needs to be in the bubble and he needs to play.

Yes and more front office excuses for people getting paid millions every year to be not only overpaid but average at best, if not below norm, at their jobs in running the franchise.

Giving Zion a pass saying he is young is weak.

Top draft pick, should be in shape and ready to play. Has to be in great shape to play good D. He isn’t. Gentry babying him isn’t helping.
