Carlisle is one of the only coaches in 20 years to win without multiple top 15 players and he did it against a historical Miami team.

Since then he has consistently exceeded expectations.

Dallas in 2011 is underestimate imo. They still sweeped the Lakers which were champion the year before (the lakers still had their bones) !

Nowitzki (a top 15 player) + Terry + Kidd + Marion (one of best defender in NBA atm) + Chandler were really good.
Carlisle played a part in this title ofc but the players were still very talented.

I put Carlisle in third tier cause I see above all that his team has become a first round exit team in PO since 2012...And his coaching is actually average for me (Luka Doncic's usage rate is too high for example, I don't like the way he uses Porzingis and he just copied Rockets's playstyle to his team...)

quote:

Doc, for all his faults as GM, has a chip and has consistently produced year after year. Dig down into each of his seasons and the only reason he didn’t advance was injuries or coming up against historical teams barring maybe one season. Both of them have done more than any of those you named in the second tier.

Win a chip with Garnett + Pierce + Allen + Rondo and good defensive roles players...I honestly think others coachs could do it also...
Moreover, he's the recordman of "i blow a 3-1 lead"...

His coaching with the Clips this year was so bad in PO (Zubac did not have enough minutes so he was more impactful than Harrell which too much played on the other hand, Reggie Jackson who was on the floor during Doncic's buzzer beater when he is one of the worst defenders of the team was ridiculous...etc)

So who is in your first two tiers if Carlisle, again, one of the only teams in the last two decades to win without multiple top 15 players, is somehow getting relegated to third tier?

Same goes with Doc, who took a team many thought would compete for the lottery into the playoffs and handed an all time great GS two losses?

Who are you putting above these two so clearly?

Because maybe your ranking makes sense if the top 2 tiers are incredibly exclusionary, but if you start throwing certain people that would typically be in there than it becomes problematic

Carlisle is no worse than the 5th best coach in the league. Probably closer to 3

Look folks....there are about 65-70 men who do the following...assistant coach....then head coach....get fired....be an announcer....go back to asst coach or head coach....get fired again...go back to the broadcast booth.....rinse and repeat.....it is good if you in the rotation....and the new NO coach....how many championships for this guy? Playoff do not count because all but 4 nba teams make playoffs. Pels will get more of the same.

However, if we become championship contenders I've never forgotten this quote from Shaq about him:

"I heard his comment. Flopping to me is doing it more than one time, and I realized when I tried to take the charge, as I went down, I realized that that play reminded me of his whole coaching career," O'Neal said of Van Gundy. "And one thing I really despise is a front-runner, so I know for a fact that he's a master of panic, and when it gets time for his team to go in the postseason and do certain things, he will let them down because of his panic. I've been there before, I've played for him."

What was the comment he was referring to?

Bump away. Literally every coach we had before him did not have Stan's resume. I saw a guy that built a finals team around a dominant big and was excited.

You kinda agreed with the thread but were right along with myself and several others in liking the hire.

The Bump is kinda a dumb flex. Anyone with a brain knows the main issue last year was the roster construction, not stan, although he wasn't the right fit.

Saying “I think he’ll be fine but I also think this board is overhyping him” is not me being a fan of the hire.

Bumping was not meant to be a flex. It wasn’t a “I told you so” it’s just the only thread I posted in about the hire last year and I remember how much people loved the hire. I was pretty meh on it but this isn’t about me

It is always fun to look back. Did anyone ever find out how much Van Gundy got?

It's a typical retread 60+ year old head coach hire. Likely result is 6 to 8 seed high end results at best. I think older coaches do adapt well to changing times and ways sports evolve and will hurt the long term top potential of the teams star. This is why I would rather give younger assistants 3 years!

This guy nailed it and of course had the most downvotes in the thread. Same exact thing happened in the Adams trade thread coincidently with the posters that blasted that trade….

3 major players for us (adams, Bledsoe, jj) all fell off of a cliff. No team can really recover from 3 of your supposed top 6 players playing as bad as they did.
