I'm seeing some SONS aren't happy with the hiring of a coach that's won a frickton of games and makes his teams very good defensively.

Please explain to me why hiring Stan is such a bad idea. Dudes had b2b 59 win seasons, several 50+ win seasons, has name recognition as a Van Gundy, has charisma and passion for his players, recognized that the future of offenses was 3s and layups before any other coach and again, and I cannot stress this enough, HIS TEAMS PLAY GOOD DEFENSE. TOP 10 DEFENSE SONS.

Most point to his failures in Detroit as well as thinking all retreads are terrible coaches. It is for sure a flawed, small sample size, results based analysis.

Even if he had been less successful with winning, like say he was more of a "regular season" coach without as much playoff success, he still seems to check all of the culture building boxes the FO and fans were looking for. People wanted Heat assistants like Dan Craig to help bring Heat Culture here, Stan helped build Heat Culture. He was Riley's assistant for 6 years and the Heat head coach for 3.

I'm honestly a little alarmed at how good of a fit I think he is. I feel like I'm missing something, but of all of the possible candidates we kicked around, I feel like he's the best choice. He may not lead the Pels to the championship, but he should build a foundation to get them there.

It's a typical retread 60+ year old head coach hire. Likely result is 6 to 8 seed high end results at best.

I think older coaches do adapt well to changing times and ways sports evolve and will hurt the long term top potential of the teams star.

This is why I would rather give younger assistants 3 years!

He a great coach that will hold Zion accountable. Look what Dwight did with and without SVG.

SVG failed as a GM not a coach.

One poster actually said he isn't innovative...and meant it.

I think he is a good coach with a good system. The Pels will develop better under him. However, if we become championship contenders I've never forgotten this quote from Shaq about him:

"I heard his comment. Flopping to me is doing it more than one time, and I realized when I tried to take the charge, as I went down, I realized that that play reminded me of his whole coaching career," O'Neal said of Van Gundy. "And one thing I really despise is a front-runner, so I know for a fact that he's a master of panic, and when it gets time for his team to go in the postseason and do certain things, he will let them down because of his panic. I've been there before, I've played for him."

I hope this is not the case but I fear it is. I feel like Pat Riley believed that too.

I hope your right. Grif was smart to do a 4 year contract. Tells me Van Gundy was the best coach available for the team at the moment. If Zion can stay healthy in the next 4 years we'll be the top coaching destination. Van Gundy will have shown whether or not his coaching ability in the playoffs has improved. Because, he will be able to get us there.

I think he’ll be fine but I also think this board is overhyping him.

Its the best coach we've had in franchise history. The hype is justified

I’ve said I think SVG can be strongly argued to slot in somewhere in the second tier of coaches in this league.

The first tier being occupied by coaches like Spoelstra, Nurse, Carlisle, Kerr, Pop, Stevens, Budenholzer.

Second tier being where guys like Malone, Snyder, Doc, Stotts, and I think, SVG would sit.

You can absolutely win championships in this league with guys like that.

Now may there come a time where you have a team that is tapped out and you need that extra push and so maybe you take that chance on some bright assistant in the wings like a Will Weaver? Certainly. But the fact we have a guy that has legitimately built contenders and demonstrated a forward thinking mindset in a way that produces success on the court, that is basically a first for this franchise. SVG has immediately become the most proven and accomplished coach in this franchise’s history.

Doc in second tier is pretty laughable...Same Thing for Carlisle and Budenholzer in first tier.

SVG is a good coach. He normally will step up the Pels defensively in all the cases.

You can feel free to disagree. Also feel free to lay out your tiers instead of just throwing rocks from that glass house.

Honestly, if I wanted to get my post even more bloated, I would say SVG has the potential to be moved into the first tier the way Carlisle and Budenholzer did, and that Doc has moved in and out of at times.

I agree that SVG is a good coach and he can be in first tier if he significantly improves the Pels (he didn't coach for 2 years thus i cannot rank him yet).

For me, First tier : Spoelstra, Nurse, Kerr, Pop, Stevens
Second tier : Malone, Snyder, Stotts, Budenholzer

Doc and Carlisle are for me third tier coachs.

Carlisle is one of the only coaches in 20 years to win without multiple top 15 players and he did it against a historical Miami team.

Since then he has consistently exceeded expectations.

Doc, for all his faults as GM, has a chip and has consistently produced year after year. Dig down into each of his seasons and the only reason he didn’t advance was injuries or coming up against historical teams barring maybe one season. Both of them have done more than any of those you named in the second tier.
