You probably shouldn’t check Twitter tonight because it’s filled with people that cover the nba commenting on how bad he was defensively tonight.
It's honestly confusingly that anyone is defending his defensive play tonight.

Zion was unequivocally bad on defense tonight.

We need to run the offense through Zion more. When he has the ball he is like a black hole drawing in defenders and everyone else is wide open and if the other team is dumb enough to leave him 1 on 1 or even 2 on 1 he is going to score 90% of the time.

When Zion is involved he gives better effort on D. Maybe he should give great effort all the time but we know Zion plays with emotion and that can be bad when he isn't being utilized but can feed the beast like no other when he is on. It is on coach and his teammates to support him.

Larry played great in the 4th.

Jose earns every minute. He turns games around. I don't see how he isn't getting more than 18 minutes. Even when he isn't getting as many sneak steals he is changing how teams bring the ball up the court and it is taking teams longer to get into their offense. Plus another 75% game from 3...

He basically didn’t even try defensively.

Zion is bad on defense but I can’t recall him being THIS bad in 20-21

I mean Willie said he wasn’t out the last 3:37 with an injury. He was out because he was getting absolutely abused on Defense.

This. Which is why I refute the losing more weight problem. Towards the end of 20-21 he was slightly below average on D. He was never this bad. He’s easily 20 pounds skinnier than 20-21 Zion. I think it’s mental/not in basketball shape/haven’t played more so than still a weight issue. Could he lose some more pounds? Maybe 10. But I don’t think everything is solely tied to his weight like some here believe

I think it’s a combo of game shape and rust.

Defense in basketball has huge “feel” and mental aspects to it. When you haven’t played in awhile it’s usually the hardest thing to get back

Nobody said it was solely his weight.

Imho, Zion just lacks lateral quickness, making it tough to stay in front of people. He doesn’t slide his feet.

There's no think about it. He hasn't played a competitive game in over 500 days. 6 games total now. Give him 25-30 games and you'll get a much better idea of what he's capable of. He'll be in better game shape and instincts will take over on defense instead of thinking.

I agree with all of this.

Zion is not good on defense to say the least right now, but he definitely CAN be dominant on offense. At this point, we need to coach to our strong suits. The time for expanding zion's game is not in game 5 of the season after not playing in over a year. We know he's nearly unguardable driving in from the top. Even with a loaded paint he has shown dominance in that set.

We aren't seeing that hardly at all so far.

At this point when zion is only 22, we have to make up for his poor defense with his offense. Sure he might give up 20 a night, but you have to put him in position to get his 27+ on the other end.

Did it seem like Herb Jones was rusty tonight?

Yes I did and he was not terrible at all. He certainly had some bad plays, but overall he was fine. Had a great steal too when we were struggling on D. Heck, he had to best +/- of all the starters for those who rely on stats. People who only want to complain about everything he does will remember a few bad defensive plays and ignore any solid plays. You can come to the board and pick those posters out routinely.

A few bad plays? He was blown by nearly every time someone drove on him from the perimeter. It caused a lot of issues with one or sometimes two people having to leave their man to make up for his inability to stay with his; this was a large reason why the Warriors had so many open looks. Willie must have seen it too as there is a reason he didn't play at the end - we couldn't have such a massive liability on D.

I honestly don't know how anyone could watch that performance and think of it as anything but bad. He's usually not that much of a liability but tonight his D truly was horrendous.

He was really bad for most of the game, even had a few head scratchers on defense, but he was really good on both ends to close out the game.

Herb hasn't really had a great start to the season outside of game one. He'll get better though.

It’s possible Herb regresses a bit. His defense is on the scouting report now as is his somewhat limited offensive repertoire. I swear the dude hasn’t been the same on his layups since he got ejected for doing a euro step and accidentally elbowing someone.

He had zero injuries last year which seems impossible. So far this year, he has had 2.

Offensively, he’s probably never going to get enough touches to get into a rhythm unless we have 2-3 main players injured.

He just needs to continue to make the right play on offense Instead of overly forcing the issue when the ball happens to find him.

Even at his worst, Herb still plays solid defense and usually makes his free throws.

At his best, he’s obviously an all defensive team level player and he can give you 15 on offense if his number is called. I remember the game he outdueled Jokic down the stretch. He probably does too and he might be having a little bit of an issue with how marginalized his offensive role has become with CJ, Zion and featuring Trey Murphy, Nance and Jose more on offense.
