San Antonio was known to be waiting with a short-term contract for Reid and the hope of pairing him with Victor Wembanyama in the frontcourt, sources said. Now the Spurs will have to turn to other targets, perhaps someone like Pelicans center Jonas Valanciunas, as New Orleans and San Antonio recently did business on offloading Devonte’ Graham’s contract, and the Pelicans, sources said, have since made Valanciunas available in search of more mobile, rim-protecting big men. New Orleans made one call, sources said, to Cleveland about obtaining Jarrett Allen.

Figured this deserved its own thread. Would hate to lose Jonas, and if we do it needs to be for a definitive upgrade or get more assets back.

Just not sure how it all works with the salaries we have and the ones that are incoming, that's a good chunk of money at $20mil a year for the next 3 years.

Jarret Allen is a really good fit, but I think the Pels really need to realize that they are going to need to go cheap somewhere, and that somewhere should likely be Center.

Yea, this

Last postseason notwithstanding, I like him and like you said, a good fit for what we need from the position.

But if we have to operate like a team that isn't going into the tax annually, these salaries are adding up.

Though I guess there's some world where you could get off of CJ and Allen in before their final years to try and get expirings 1 year earlier so we could then have room to extend Trey.

Another possibility, and I know it's blasphemy to bring up as we love our guy, but given we have a bunch of wings on the team and not so much centers that fit, it could make since to give Allen the mid size contract and look to move Herb Jones instead. I hate even saying it, but it's not the worst idea. If we feel Dyson is going to be an elite defender, that's a bit of a redundant skill set and again, we have wings so I could see this making sense...or is that a terrible idea?

We going to go find a Dollar Tree center to replace Willy?

Unfortunately, I think it is a reality under this new CBA.

We can either keep our guys or we can move some of them for assets rather than pay them.

I’d love to keep Herb but that may not be possible without ridding ourselves of other contracts like CJ’s.

We can’t pay everyone… that’s a fact of the new CBA. Best we can do is keep the most valuable and varied skill sets. I don’t want to give up Herb but if I was Griffin I’d be looking to consolidate assets to deals I can jettison.

Really I would have traded BI or Z for Scoot. We’d have a very nice cap situation then and could resign all our young guys. But c’est la vie

That's what Denver did multiple times. Best case scenario for the Pels is probably if 2 years from now the 5 best players on the team are

Dyson
Hawk
Trey
BI
Zion

They will clearly need a traditional center on the roster to counter Jokic and Embiid, but the position should probably only take $20-$30 million total like it is now. You just need better fits with the different pieces.

I don't think it's a terrible idea, just depends on the team's feelings about Dyson. Jonas and Herb for Allen would free up some of the wing log jam that we have and kick the can down the road a bit in terms of salaries that we'll have to pay up for. Allen's contract would only be for 13-14% of the cap, which is pretty low.

Unfortunately we're terrible at finding decent centers even the cheap ones. We've been using assets to try to land decent ones since Griffin got here. A revolving door of centers and here we are going into the 23/24 season trying to find another center. It's exhausting.

We suck developing bigs and we really suck at finding a complimentary center for our group.

WANT - GIVE ME NOW

Sadly I'd rather sacrifice some of our depth. Allen with Zion Herb BI Trey and non broken finger CJ is an elite top 6. You have a future MVP - 4 all stars - a three point finalist - and 2 future all-nba defensive players.

Dyson regressed big time the second half of the season. That's a terrible sign. Hope he turns it around.

Typical rookie rollercoaster. Not worried about it.

After a major ankle sprain. Give him time. Dyson is a huge piece going forward for the Pels

Drafting Dyson instead of Duren looks worse by the day. This is Griff's second biggest mistake to date, just behind trading down from 4.

Allen was hot garbage when it mattered, and we are going to be saddled with his large contract at the 5? And that means possibly trading an all-NBA level talent in Herb?

No thanks.

Dyson and Hawkins would be a monster backcourt if The vision comes to fruition.

We were never keeping BI, Zion, Trey, Herb, and Dyson long-term under either CBA

Let's revisit this in the 2025 season. I'm confident Daniels will be a more impactful player than Duren.

Duren will get played off the floor in the playoffs if Detroit ever gets there.

Would love Jarrett Allen...makes sense for Cleveland if they view Mobley is their C of the future. Rumor they are interested in Kuzma too.

Unfortunately I don’t think Herb will be here long term unless we get hime for MLE level money.

Thinking of teams that would be interested in Jonas Miami comes to mind. Their lack of size killed them against Denver. They’re trying to dump Lowry’s salary, and Spurs are looking for a vet. Cavs are probably looking to move Mobley to the 5 full time if they’re shopping Allen.

Miami: Jonas
Spurs: Lowry, 271st from Miami
Pels: Allen
Cavs: Herb, Kira

This also moves us around 15.5 million below the tax if we move or cut Temple, which gives us full MLE to work with.
