Just take the L baw. It is a unreasonable comp. No big deal though. We all have good and bad moments on here. Doubling down on this take isn’t the path to redemption in this circumstance.

My uncle coached Murphy at Cary Academy (head coach) in Nc

He's a great kid and a really hard worker

Pels got someone that will develop nicely.

Yeah Murphy fits what we need perfectly. We need a shooter off the bench with some size that can play defense. He isn’t going to be an all star but he will be a very solid role player.

I am a believer in BPA instead of drafting for fit. When BPA is also a great fit, then that is a really large W.

I'm ecstatic about Murphy and am very hopeful for Herb Jones. Murphy fits us perfectly in what we need to space the floor, plays good D, and seems like a good kid.

Almost every draft grade has us as an A and most thought our pick at 17 was better than the Grizz at 10

Murphy or Kispert definitely felt like the best fits for this team right now looking back. Just an all around great fit.

Per Adrian Wojnarowski.

New Orleans moved down to No. 17 this week, and atop their draft board: Trey Murphy.

Trey has been linked to us for some time. If he really was the guy that we wanted, I assume we would have taken him at 10. Props to Griff, especially after hearing what the Kings were offering the Grizz. We got off of two terrible contracts, picked up the perfect center to pair with Zion, still got our guy at a lower salary slot, made a cool 2 mil for Mrs B, and it only costs us the Lakers' first, which will probably be in the 26-30 range next year.

Trey is a more athletic Ryan Anderson. Can't see him on the floor with Zion and Ingram at the same time.
TM can give the Pels some solid minutes as a power forward off the bench.

I really don't see that comparison.

He's way too frail to be a power forward and do anything down low. He's a 3 and D wing.

He can definitely play small ball 4, and as he puts on a little muscle will increasingly do so.

He's 6'9" with a 7 foot wingspan.

Yeah, I think that he's a 3 for now who will become a 4 eventually, after a year or two in the weight room. He's got the frame for sure.

He's not going to be banging down low, but in a small ball 4 he's basically just going to be camped in the corner anyway

Not sure on that one, I like JV, but perfect center for Zion?

But overall Griff has done a solid job cleaning up his mess so far while not actually sacrificing a ton.

I like Trey Murphy a good bit. Think he will be a solid role player in this league for a long time.

No, he's basically Cam Johnson.

He's going to be a versat8pmug and play spacer. He should be able to play some 2-4 depending on the matchups. People don't realize this but the kid has range comfortably out to 30ft.

As far as movement shooting goes, I've seen him do some of that in his high school highlights and he looked good off of those actions. I think he has the ability to do it with some training but we need to understand that Virginia's offense isn't calling for their perimeter players to move much around the perimeter and that plays a part in what he can do within the framework of that offense. He has a lot of potential if you consider how well he moves off ball when he's cutting and diving to the basket.

Just reading through the thread and this killed me. I mean how could you read up on Murphy and come away thinking his comp was Ben Simmons but without expectations.

But the idea that the Pels can rest on their laurels and should be avoiding high upside guys because we already have a few, when reality is this still isn’t a playoff team, may actually be taking some steps back if we lose Lonzo, is ridiculous.

The Pels, Lakers, Grizz, Rockets and Thunder were probably the only teams in the draft that showed they weren't resting on their laurels. Pretty surprised at your take here. Besides the trade and that this was just the 17th pick, who exactly was there that would have made you happy/been the swing for the fences pick? I guess you're wanting another guy that will take 3 years to develop to make any type of impact and be too late to even be a factor in Zion wanting to stay or not. We need guys that can make an impact now. This guy, in theory, can come in and give quality minutes right away and fills major needs. I dont get how people can not be happy with this pick.
