Sean marks is doing a good job so far
if he can get a pick without taking/stretching asik himself then why would he take asik?
at least mosgov and Carroll can play

Good young players in KCP, D'lo, RHJ, Levert, etc... They'd have the Raps and Pels 2018 first round picks. Then they can land a lottery pick in 2019.

That seems like a pretty decent turnaround compared to how empty handed they looked over the last few years.

Buyout - the amount agreed to be paid count against the cap.
It might be stretched.

So virtually if Asik agrees for 17,5. 17.5 is a cap hit

but we can't give him the rest of the money some other way, so he has to agree to pass on 7.5M for no reason. that's my question, is there a way to pay him the full $25M, without having the full $25M stretched?

He agrees to give us discount. He wont see those $$$ from Pels.

He gets the money and walks wherever he wants.
He may earn difference in other more suitable place.

This discount is for him cost of freedom.
If he wants to play again. He may bite.
He may prefer money.
Depends on the negiotiating parts.

I can't see him giving up that money unless he think he can actually play in Europe and can actually make money, and playing is important to him.

Is there a number we need him to get to so we can make the trades and moves we want to make? is it $17.5M?

whatever happened to that Asik for Matthews trade with Dallas? They are in rebuild mode and Matthews isn't a part of their future.

The price of signing Asik and now shipping him is probably a 1st and 2nd round pick.

What MM has been saying on twitter is the hold up isn't the Nets taking Asik, they won't, but Asik agreeing to a discounted buyout. Once they can stretch him, then a trade of probably Ajinca/QPon for Lin can happen as well as using the MLE and bringing back Cunningham.
He said Dell wants them to take Asik, but they want Ajinca/QPon/NGs with the 1st. Makes me wonder how much we want to pay Cunningham if an Asik buyout is holding things up. An Ajinca/QPon/NGs for Lin deal is pretty cap neutral.

I'm not a big fan of giving up a first for 1 year of Lin. Only reason i'd give up the first is if they take Asik.
If he had 2 years left, then it wouldn't bother me so much, but what you going to do next year when he opts out? resign him and stretch Cousins, and do nothing else since you won't have any cap space?

I'm all for trading the 1st round pick, but it's kind of dumb to trade away a 1st for a 1 year rental on a player who doesn't move the needle that much.

The team is about $6 million away from the tax. Lin for Ajinca/QPon adds $3.2 million to salary so now you're $2.8 million away from the tax. Cunningham is good enough to get more than $2.8, he's a multi position defender that hit almost 40% from 3 last year.

Stretch Asik and you add $7 million to the equation so you can maybe sign Cunningham for $4 and bring in an Afflalo for $4-$5.

What do you do with any PG you trade for when the time comes? Starting next year:

AD - $36
Cousins - $31
Jrue - $26
Hill - $12
Moore - $8

I think we can agree that those are all core players at least from Demps' perspective that he'd like to keep. That's $113 million in salary next year for just those 5 players. The tax line will probably be around $122. The only way you don't become a tax team is if Diallo and Jackson are ready for prime time by then. Benson will supposedly pay the tax for a contender, but this team is currently projecting as a 6-8 seed.

Even if Lin makes you a 4 seed, do you go into the tax to pay him $18-$20 million?

Is there a site with all the salaries or a spreadsheet somewhere?

You do that and that leaves you playing Diallo at the 5 off the bench and Solo and Cunningham playing a lot of 4.
I know we need shooters, but we have got to find a backup 5 that can actually play.

I wonder how committed the Nets are to Carroll. If we offered Solo & Asik + a 1st & 2nd for Carroll & Lin would they take it?

Lin for one season is not worth a 1.

He's not that great. "Good". Not a 1.

I keep 1s and hope for a great player, great fit for the 14th to 20th pick in the draft.

Where are you getting those #s from? Last I saw (assuming Jrue's 1st year is $24+ million) was that we were about $2 million from the tax line, but that included DC's cap hold of about $5.7 million. Trading QPon/Ajinca/Toupane adds only about $1.7 million of cap. So, that would mean we have about $5.8 million to offer DC which should be plenty. They must have some other move they are looking to do as well if they are concerned about Asik's contract before making the moves.

Yeah, I'd only give up a first for an quasi all-star or to get rid of Asik. No way a 1st for Lin is even something that should be considered unless it means we dump Asik.
