I agree with trying to run back the same lineup under the condition that there is not a clear upgrade available to us. There will be a LOT of movement this summer leading to a lot of opportunity and potentially a buyer's market. Not to mention the Pels have produced a long of momentum. So you have to ask yourself, is this the time to be aggressive and ride this progress? or play safe and wait for your spot?

To your second point, I completely agree with finding some depth. The question is how. Idk if yall saw the letter Gayle Benson put out today (probably should be a thread about it) but it sounds like she is fully invested in this organization's future and is ready and willing to do what it takes (aka go into the luxury tax) to make the Pelicans title contenders. But even so, who can we get?

For shits & giggles....what could we get if they do indeed go into the Luxury Tax??

Let’s say we re-sign Boogie.....then what other pieces could be added?

I believe AD wants to play with cousins and vice versa. The key is to get rondo back for atleast another year with those 2 and Holliday. I don't care for cousins but you gotta keep AD happy. Moore and milotic are trade bait. The hardest one to get rid of is hill, however if you can trade Moore and the 2nd round for a late first round you can find an athletic sf. Just my thoughts.

Those salaries quoted in the beginning of post were for 2017/2018

But DeionDeion is right.
Pels have $92m+ commited to 7 guaranteed players

Here is salary cap sheet from Eric Pincus

I’d like Kyle Anderson, but I’m not sure if we can afford him considering he’s a restricted FA

Have to do everything possible to get Rondo back here. This team would not be remotely the same without him. Our offense would basically have to hit the reset button.

Casual fans need to reset what they think is possible via free agency. Our free agency is going to consist of re-signing Boogie and Rondo, then dumpster diving for vet minimums.

Any real roster re-tooling (adding a wing) will have to be done via the trade market. I think the most likley course is to run it back and hope Boogie returns healthy as well as Solo. Maybe we try to shed Anjica for a more useful piece, but cap space will likely be at a premium this summer.

Isn’t Ajinca a valuable trade piece this season? Does his value differentiate between the off season and trade deadline?

Yes. If you try to move him now he's a negative and you'd have to pay like they gave Chicago a 2nd and cash to take QPon last offseason. When the deadline comes Ajinca's expiring will actually become a positive and the kind of contract teams you're trading with want so you won't have to pay to include him in a move.

Depends on how you define value. He is an expiring we can use in a trade to match salaries. Another view is that he is a $5M contract that will cost us $10M in cash and doesn't play.

Realistically we have to turn Hill/Moore/Ajinca/1st into Not-Solomon-Hill. That’s the move we have available. Unfortunately about the only downside of this team overachieving this year is the devaluing of our first round pick next year to potential trade partners.

I don't see us bringing Clark back with Jackson's return to health. Hopefully we can strike luck with our second rounder and get someone who can provide an NBA-ready skill and body on a cheap contract. Someone like Gary Clark at Cincinnati who can come in immediately and play minutes and grab some boards, anything else would be gravy.

The only trade that I could think of that might work would be Hill/Moore/Ajinca/1st for Batum. That would save Charlotte 5 mil in 19-20 and 27 mil in 20-21, but still not sure that they'd do it.

I think our SF options are

1) Gambling on another Darius Miller level signing
2) Evil Solo
3) Paul George Miracle Trade

The SF position might not get better until Hill becomes more tradeable which probably isn't any time next year.

I’m not really sure what you’d expect for the shite sandwich that is Hill/Moore/Ajinca/late first. Moore is a neutral value, Hill and Ajinca are both negatives, and a late first isn’t worth much.

The team needs a real SF, and I’m not sure that there is really an avenue to land one without taking on some negative ‘asset’.

The most exciting quote for me from Gentry's press conference was when he talked about what skill AD was going to work on this summer:

quote:

"I still think he can be a much better three-point shooter than he is. I think he shoots the ball well enough that he should be in the mid thirties, high thirties. I think he could get there and I think that's one of the things that you'll see him work on and he'll continue to work on his ball handling where he becomes a facilitator more.

If AD can develop his 3 into something he trusts as much as his long midrange while bettering his handle, his game goes to an entirely new level. AD passes up so many open 3's either moving the ball back to a guard or pump faking into a couple dribbles for a long 2. If he has the ability to just take those 3's immediately or pull up from 3 on the dribble and convert like Niko, defenders will have to guard him so much further out and focus on closing out on him so much more.

Once they start guarding him closer on the perimeter, he can get foul shots on those pump fakes or if he improves his handle, he can drive the lane for a dunk or an easy assist instead of taking a midrange pullup.
