Fifteen-year NBA veteran and ESPN analyst JJ Redick interviewed for the Toronto Raptors' coaching job this week, sources told ESPN on Wednesday.

Redick was part of a first round of interviews and met with franchise leadership in Toronto recently, sources said. He had been a target for several teams, including the Boston Celtics, as an assistant coach since retiring as a player in 2021.

Redick is one of more than a dozen candidates who have talked with the Raptors in a wide-ranging search process, sources said. ESPN reported recently that Toronto had gained permission to interview several candidates, including Golden State's Kenny Atkinson, Milwaukee's Charles Lee, Phoenix's Kevin Young, San Antonio's Mitch Johnson, Sacramento's Jordi Fernandez, Memphis' Darko Rajakovic and Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon. Current Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin is also an interview candidate for the job, sources said.

Going straight to head coach just seems like a mistake by everyone involved.

To be fair it doesn't sound like he's near the top of the list and we probably wouldn't have even heard about it if he wasn't so high profile with his media gigs. This is probably just Woj doing his boy a solid and getting his name out there.

Wasn't JJ universally loved by the players when he was here?

If we lost Vinson, I wouldn’t mind bringing him in as a shooting coach.

Definitely not always the case that being good at something will make you good at teaching it, but Reddick knows how to shoot.

I like JJ. I think he's in no way ready to be a head coach. Would probably need to be on the sidelines a bit in an assistant role.

I suspect he knows the X's and O's well but wouldn't be ready to manage the personalities.

He’s a bright guy. I think he’d probably be immediately solid tbh. The biggest outcry will come from the African American community if JJ Redick lands a job after being retired for one season.

He’s relatively cerebral though and I could see him doing very well in an interview setting.

JJ Redick type players (good, not great), make good to great coaches more often than not.

He basically had to turn down the Celtics for an assistant coaching job this summer. He will be a head coach within the next 3 years if he really wants to be one.

If he were to get into coaching, he wouldn’t leave the north east. Everything he does is pretty much out of Brooklyn or the ESPN studio across the bridge.
