If Ja gets a suspension like that, I think we have to take advantage and make as many big moves as we can this offseason. Its all in time.

Yes I am he got suspended for holding a gun. Got suspended for holding a gun got suspended for holding a gun. He did nothing wrong didn’t do anything illegal didn’t commit any crimes just held a gun. Now he’s holding a gun again in the off-season. That’s why I said he should only touch basketballs

Imagine coming in so hot yet so ignorant about the issue.

I know the general theme for the smaller market teams is you have 1 good season then your owner sees that success and gives you 1 year in the tax to go for it.

But yea, I think we're good enough to make a run but if we keep waiting for that 1 magical healthy year, it may never come. So I get that point of view if that's it from ownership, but we have the team to make a bit of a run, I'd love to see, as you said, next season be the all in year. Make a big splash, go into the tax and let's hope for the best. If it fails spectacularly due to injuries, then I'll never complain again about us not paying the tax...maybe.

Sam Amick in The Athletic:

quote:

The Grizzlies, who announced on Sunday that they’ve suspended Morant from all team activities while the league investigates, have created a classic small-market culture where the fear of upsetting the star supersedes all and undermines any chance they might have at being holistically sound. We’ve seen this on the court, where the team’s lack of poise has long since become a hallmark of this once-promising era. We’ve seen it in the way the Grizzlies handle the media, with league-mandated rules being routinely circumvented long before any of these incidents took place and excuses made all along the way in an attempt to cater to their superstar. That’s on all of them, from owner Robert Pera to general manager Zach Kleiman, coach Taylor Jenkins on down.

The Pels don't seem unafraid of upsetting Zion, that approach hasn't seemed to work either.

Well, the Pels at least haven't wrecked their team culture. If you were betting on a team to win a title in the next five years, I think most people would, today, give the Pels better odds than the Grizz.

Yep

We hear all the rumors, too many to think they're all made up at this point, of Zion not taking rehab seriously, sleeping through film sessions, showing up late or missing rehab sessions entirely...but you never once have heard anything the team has done to right this. So it's a pretty good guess that we're just letting Zion do whatever he wants because we're scared he'll demand out if we try to give him tough love.

I get the strategy of trying to appease your young, star player. I really do. But when it quite simply hasn't worked through 4 years, the only option is to get tougher on him and hope for the best. You know the other way didn't work, so you should know it's not going to work going forward, so this is your Hail Mary attempt but at least you're doing something.

And obviously, the real issue is not establishing the culture of accountability from day 1, but that ship hs sailed.

Not sure I agree. I guess there's multiples types or layers of the culture. We definitely seem to have a culture of players who like being around each other, no question about that.

It seems CJ is trying but he's only been here a bit over a year so 1 guy can't flip things that quickly, but the culture of accountability seems to have failed as Zion doesn't appear to have ever been held accountable for not putting in the work, mainly when injured.

David Griffin has gone completely out of his way to protect Zion to the point where it can be considered ridiculous. Zion during his exit interview literally said he was fine physically, he just wasn’t feeling like himself. Griffin responds within a day or 2 and says Zion misspoke and he was never cleared to play.

Hopefully they’re holding Zion accountable behind closed doors, but we are certainly falling into the same trap as the Grizz in that we are letting our superstar get away with anything because we don’t want to piss him off.

Ja's recent IG posts. He would seem to be suicidal.

But with each incident that comes out, I wonder how mad it makes Ja that he wants to be the tough guy but dudes like Kwame Brown and well, 95% of other people are just pointing and laughing at him and how not tough he is. That has to be eating him up so badly right now.

It reminds me of in the 90s when the NBA got real thuggish ruggish and every once in a while one of those dumbasses would cross Charles Oakley, I guess because they thought since he wasn't outwardly flexing as a tough guy he wasn't one, and they found out real quick how much of a fake tough guy they were

This is essentially the central theme of Charles Oakley's book - which is pretty good if you haven't read it.

Basically, 80% of the stories take a detour to "welp, then I had to show them what I was about."

Even the guys who came from legit hoods weren't usually anything close to gangsters and the real gangsters provided them cover growing up to allow them to ball. I don't know if many, if any, of those guys were really legit tough guys.

Primary example: Carmelo "your wife tasted like Honey Nut Cheerios" Anthony

Just when I thought all the shite Morant has been doing lately couldn't possibly be dumber, with the news yesterday I learned he had a little kid.

His stupid level knows no bounds.

But I do hope he's ok. I know the family will cover for him and they should, but I don't buy for one second that he posted that since he was taking a break from social media. That makes no sense. Definitely felt like a cry for help.

There was some concern as police were sent to do a welfare check. He told them he was just leaving social media and that is what the "goodbye" was about.

Which doesn't make sense.

I don't understand why you'd tell your family bye on social media because you're taking a break from social media. I don't buy it, there's just no logic to it.

Article doesn't say but you'd assume or think it's his own family that called police, so that would further show that their reasoning doesn't really make sense.
