In terms of top 5 players that wont give a frick about the in-season tourney Kawhi and Kyrie have to be pretty high.

Also the Celtics got a waltz of a group(Nets, Raptors, Bulls, Magic).

I believe the groups have something to do with regular season standings. The point of this is to make early season games more relevant. Everything new will be criticized but cup winning fan bases will take pride and a few years down the road people will be into it.

The cup has a generic name but I’m sure once Silver retires itll be renamed for him.

$$$$$$$

Should’ve made it that the winning team gets an extra pick either at the end of the lottery or end of first round. Pointless otherwise for the fans.

What I would have did…

Play tournament games which are also regular season games on the first 14 Tuesday or Wednesday nights of the season from opening night in October until mid-January. Every team plays only against the others in their conference. You can advertise them as “NBA fast lane” games.

Then take the best two teams. Have them play in the final in Las Vegas in early March (on a night with no other games). Winner gets their playoff spot guaranteed (hence the “fast lane” and $2 million per player).

It would still be stupid, but then at least only two teams would get one extra game.

Oooh…. Most of those aren’t so bad but drawing the champs sucks.

I think the winner of the tourney should move up one seed in the playoff seeding or move up 5 slots in the draft or something like that.

So, what does this actually mean if you don’t win the real championship?

It’s actually a championship a team like the Pels can actually win bc it’s relatively meaningless and doesn’t require good health all season.

This was basically designed for the 24 teams that never have a chance in hell to win the real deal.

They should have given the winning team the 15th slot in the draft lottery.

I’ve listened to 6 different podcasts about this. Not one came up with a reason fans should care about this (imo). What am I missing?

It sounds like they just “packaged” a few regular season games, but didn’t add any REAL value to winning or losing.

Its another thing for fans to brag about. It has no history so no one cares right now but all the major soccer leagues do this and the fans sure as shite like it if they win the domestic cup. NBA fans will do the same over time. The should add a team incentive though, like winner gets the 15th pick in the draft, its not in the lottery but the its the first pick outside the lottery

Yeah I’m pretty sure in 20 years fans will care, esp fans of teams who have won several and are in competition for most Cups, like the lakers and Celtics are about 17 championships.

Can’t wait until the LeBron fans start talking about how having these makes him better than MJ.

i highly doubt it.

Soccer is different in that they don't have a playoffs like basketball to determine a champion. The FA cup is pretty much what that is, and is almost as prestigious as winning the league.
The Carabao Cup is the worthless in season tournament that no one gives a shite about, and that's exactly what this tournament will be like.

The only incentive anyone has for this tournament, fans/players/teams, are the minimum salary players trying harder to win so they can make more money.
It's not going to all of a sudden make this regular season game mean more than the non tournament regular season game.

Like you and others have said, the winner getting the 15th pick in the draft would be something that would motivate a team to win it on top of the money that the players are wanting, since they won't care about the draft pick. And it should be the 15th pick in addition to the pick they will already get, so make the 1st round 31 picks now.
