This is gay. Just shows you how little confidence he has in himself after he blew the Finals. With Brunson, it was different bc his dad is a Coach on the Knicks and he was a 2nd Rd pick, taking $100M less on what might be his best opportunity at a huge contract if things didn't work out. I think there is another alternative that hasn't been brought up. Maybe the Spurs were not willing to give the full Supermax, so Wemby had to take the deal they offered him.

People don't want to admit this, but Wembenyama is going to have a short, injury riddled career. He needs to guarantee as much money as possible now before those injuries start pilling up. This was the safe play for both sides.

They did though, Shams even says it in the linked tweet..

I would take a few million less if I was in a competent organization where they would use the money to get better players. I’d squeeze the Pelicans for every nickel. Because you know it’ll wasted on players like Poole.
