It's obvious we need a 5. It would be wonderful if he could protect the rim, shoot the 3, and hold his own somewhat on the perimeter, but that's unlikely to find.

I want to look at this past year and who did well defending the rim as well as the perimeter. I chose to look at FG% against within 6', defensive 3P%, and eFG% on Isolation plays, and lastly at 3 point shooting.

for the TLDR, one guy showed up in the top 5 in all 3 defensive categories.......James Wiseman. (edit: i made a boo boo on the within 6' number, He's still better stat wise than expected)
Isaac was the #1 at defending within 6' and in Isolation, but somehow bad at defending the 3.
Maxi Kleber wouldn't be a bad backup 5.
Isaac and Kleber seem to have a nice balance of defense and shooting.

Okongwu gave up 60% near the basket, and 40% from 3. Does not look good. Lively and Gafford weren't all that great either. Scheme and who your perimeter defenders are play a really big role, so all these defensive stats have to be taken with some grain of salt.

First stat, FG% defended within 6' of the basket against:
(I filtered out anyone who didn't play at least 40 games, and i'm not including guys are obviously not a playoff rotation guy)

Yeah frick that guy I wouldn’t even give up JRE for him.

In all seriousness, Wendell Carter Jr I think is the most realistic option. His minutes dropped this year, Magic seem to like Mo Wagner and Bitazde just as much, and no way they pay for all 3 centers.

As always, just looking at raw stats should be taken with a grain of salt.

Wouldn't mind Wendell Carter and draft a Center with promise to develop. Dallas is a good example what the Center position still means in the League.

I'm seeing Wiseman at 56.4% DFG% on shots <6ft from the rim

You're right.
Not sure how I missed that.

Isaiah Stewart has very good defensive numbers, but are they real?

I can't say that I've watched many Pistons games this season.

He's third overall in DIFF%, first overall in DFG%, fifth in DFG% at the rim, and third in DIFF% at the rim.

And he shot 3.8 3's per game making 38% of them.

I have no idea what to make of that

I’ve wanted the Pels to go after Stewart for years as rotational front court piece. Stewart has a high motor, really worked on his three ball and adds some size to the Pels.

Give me Isaiah Stewart and try to sign Jalen Smith with (part of) the MLE.

Kessler was #4 in the league in rim protection and is likely available. He's my favorite target if we don't trade for Jarrett Allen.

Replacing nance's 20 minutes with Kessler immediately makes you better.

But that's a partial solution, we need another 10-15.

All those are good and important, but you’re missing contest percentage. A center allowing 50% at the rim, doesn’t matter if he is only contesting 20% of the shots. For example, earlier in the year, Duren was allowing a decent percentage at the rim, but was in the bottom of contest percentage among all centers, hence the pistons D wasn’t good at protecting the rim whenever he was on the floor

The solution at center has always been one of 2 things, a unicorn, or a committee. We aren't getting a unicorn, so we need to cobble together 3 rotation worthy centers costing $30 million or less combined total that provide the right combination of redundancy and versatility.

I agree with you.
Don’t know how to find that stat?

I still would love to get JV back and trade BI for a true PG but Walker Kessler would be the guy I went after if JV doesn’t come back. He’s ready for a larger role than what Utah has given him and he’s an outstanding rim protector.

I keep seeing everyone on here wanting Kessler. Why are yall so certain that he will be available? It’s not like the Jazz have a replacement ready. And Ainge usually overvalues his assets.

Kessler had a great rookie season and then took a step back this past season. Utah was expecting to start him, and it just wasn't working. He seems like he could use a change of scenery.

Larry’s problem is on offense where Kessler adds much more. Larry is really good defensively the last two years, actually better than Kessler. I don’t think switching Larry out for Kessler changes much outside of better rebounding and rim protection at the expense of versatility.

Kessler’s going to be an elite rim protector for a long time, so I like him, but our defense was already good and he doesn’t solve the offensive issues. I’d be happy to go after Kessler, but considering it’s Ainge, I’m not inclined to give up a ton of assets to acquire him.

Utah would be foolish to ship Kessler out, but he would certainly be welcomed.

Hartenstein, but the Knicks have his bird rights.

Someone will probably give him a nice deal.
