While he may still be a top 25-30 player, Lebron was never signing a huge contract. Of the rumored teams (GSW, Philly, Miami, Clev), no one had the money to sign him for a huge deal. Frankly, he's no longer in a place where he could demand such a deal unless he was willing to go to the Nets. It shouldn't be a surprise this is the agreed-upon contract.

It shouldn't be allowed. James should have got at least $15M (the full exception). There are tons of teams that could offer that, many that would offer more. He can't go from 50M to a minimum deal. It doesn't make sense, without other guarantees. He could have literally waited until February, saw what team is hot, and sign with them for the same money (or more). This is beyond shady. I can't think of anyone else getting away with this..

Bradley Beal did it last offsesson. And Westbrook did it in 2023 to go to Denver.

Both were bought out and no longer top 100 players. They were brought in to be back ups. James is a no doubt starter for this team. They are not comparable.

I can't think of any time in history, where a top 30 player has signed a minimum deal. I don't think it's ever happened. I tried Googling it, but I can't find any. Can anybody think of one?

I can't imagine the union is happy with LeBron signing for a minimum contract.

Closest example I could find was Dirk. In 2014, he was eligible for a 5 yr 239 mil extension, but signed for 3 yrs 25 mil deal. Not a min deal, but that’s still a pretty substantial pay cut. He was an all star in 2014 fwiw.

Bradley Beal came off a season averaging 17pts on 38% 3pt. That's not a minimum guy.

The base salary for the 100th ranked NBA player is $20mil and not the minimum.

2 guys making $50mil who signed for the min and should have been paid several times that amount. I'd say that's comparable.

Beal is getting paid $20M this year and every year until 2030.

Westbrook has changed teams 10x in the past 8 years. He didn't take a minimum deal until the 5th one. Nobody wanted him.

I guarantee a dozen teams offered James at least the full exception. I would even bet there were teams that would have given him 40M+, especially if the Lakers were open to a S&T. He voluntarily took a minimum deal, to go somewhere new. That just doesn't happen.

Pels would have paid him whatever for sure. With James on the Pels, city would have to build another bridge to handle all the Westbank traffic coming across to see him play every night. Meanwhile, Gayle be up in her box counting that $15 beer money hand over fist.

I get that's its Lebron but players voluntarily take less money to go somewhere and compete every single year. Lebron is 41 y/o, its not like they are getting a prime LBJ 6 years into his career.

Its more of a nod to Lebron that at 41 y/o he is still valued so high. Most 41 y/o are not getting 40-50mil contracts to begin with.

He gets a lot of shite for holding teams hostage or taking the $50-$60mil instead of taking less to add assets so its weird to now have issues with him doing the opposite at 41 y/o.

That's where I thought he would go. They are going to be pretty good in the playoffs if embiid can play.

Not like this. It doesn't happen. That's my point. There has to be something more here under the table. It just doesn't make sense otherwise.

So, he's worth dramatically more than a minimum. Why is it ok that is all he is taking?

I've never had an issue with his pay. He's been a super max player. He should make way more, given his marketing value. He's taken hometown discounts previously. It's just this deal doesn't make sense.

Similar deal to Deandre, except Deandre is fully guaranteed. That’s cool.

I’d rather support a team that Deandre Jordan is on than LeBron James. We would win more games with LeBron, for sure, but we still wouldn’t win anything meaningful. frick LeBron.

KCP is negotiating a buyout with Memphis and going to Philly also.

Philly has to dump 2 players now along with some salary, so they’re not done making moves.

They have no depth, with over half the roster on minimum deals. But their first 6 are really good, and I like Simons as a 6th man. Might be the best starting 5 in the league when healthy. But Embiid is going to miss substantial time. If they get any more injuries, they will struggle for sure. I don't see how they can add anyone else of any real value..
