Pels haven't played a tough schedule at all in the last 10 imo, but it's nice to see they've taken care of business for the most part by playing well against the bad teams.

Feels like the last 20-30 games they’ve really taken care of business against bad teams which has been refreshing.

I haven't paid attention to Dallas's schedule, but they must have some blowout wins and close losses. #5 net over last 10, 5-5 record.

Say what you will about Willie...but SOMEBODY is doin' something right...to take this bunch of, overall, LOUSY individual defenders...and somehow get the "team" defensive results that the Pels are getting.

Imagine if we actually had another solid defender like Herb...to throw into the mix. (I miss Dyson...& I'll worry about his offense later)

2023: 38%

It is a mix.

They got blown out by the Pacers and Celtics, lost close ones to the Sixers and Cavs, etc.

Willie has always been a great defensive coach but sometimes he relies too much on that side of a ball especially when the team is struggling to score points like we saw last night in the second half. Guys like Hawkins and Ryan should have got minutes last night to open up the offense. And constantly playing Nance down the stretch over JV is mind boggling dumb especially when Nance isn’t even doing anything positive on the defensive end.

That graph shows Twolves as #5 net. Dallas isn't anywhere near the top 5.

These guys should only be coming into a game when we're trailing by 10+ and need to just shoot our way back in, not when we're trying to hold a lead.

Also, Hawkins has been straight arse in his limited action lately. He'll be good in the long run, and he'll have a random good game here and there if his shot is falling, but our offense is decent-to-good enough at all three levels of scoring to not have to rely on Hawkins and Ryan who are very much one-dimensional players right now.

I've had a thought all season that Hawkins seem to be awful more often than not when he plays limited minutes, so I finally decided to look it up.

The thought or eye test tells me that the more he plays, the better he shoots. The less he plays the worse he shoots.

And the numbers seem to show this based on a few breakdowns by minutes played.

- Hawkins on the entire the season:

39% FG%
37% 3pt%
51.2% eFG%

- Hawkins when he plays 17 minutes or less(24 games):

36.1% FG%
33.3% 3pt%
46.9% eFG%

- Hawkins when he plays 12 minutes or less (15 games):

36.2% FG%
30.8% 3pt%
44.7% eFG%

- Hawkins when he plays 32 minutes or more(9 games):

44.9% FG%
38.4% 3pt%
57.9 eFG%

Dallas is a dangerous team, regardless of the metrics. They can score in bunches.

This is a great post. But ultimately a real problem for Hawkins. He’s not good enough to really be a starter at this point and is going to need to figure out how to be productive off the bench in limited minutes.

Or you invest in the guy to help him become a productive starter and hes showing with more minutes he can be an asset to this team and grow into something more. Trey didn’t become who he is until he became a vital part of the rotation. Yes I would like Willie to intregrate Hawkins more but I doubt that will happen. I just hope Willie doesn’t do the same BS next year with him. He too good of a shooter/scorer not to be an important part of the teams rotation.

By this do you mean play him more?

We're at the point of the year where we can't really have projects on the court for long outings.

I'm not worried about Hawk in the longterm and this franchise definitely hasn't given up on him if you're implying that they haven't invested in him. But right now I think he is, rightfully, out of the rotation.

Yeah agree on the point that they should have kept playing him a while ago and unfortunately its hard to invest in him now. I never said they gave up on him, I just don’t believe in the philosophy of playing certain players repeatedly over him. Yes Naji has played well but hes also an undrafted free agent who is on his last year on his contract. Earlier on I would have played Hawkins- at this point it’s probably too late. I just don’t agree with the Pelicans philosophy. To say hes rightfully out of the rotation is silly. There are plenty of games Naji should have been out of the rotation but Willie let Naji play through it. But for some reason Hawkins doesn’t have close to that leash and if he struggles for even couple minutes- hes benched. Meanwhile other players continuously get longer leashes if they struggle. To me thats not properly investing in your player. Its just panicking if the rookie has a couple bad minutes and pulling him. Meanwhile if the defensive vet has a couple bad games hes still in the rotation. Again this is a strange Willie Green issue.
