He’s not retiring. This is about him wanting the attention, and it also puts pressure on the front office to get him more help because Lebron always needs more help.

Can someone break down the Lakers cap and who they can afford to bring back next year?

From Jovan Buha in The Athletic

On playing with his son:
quote:

For years, James has indicated his goal was to play into his 40s alongside his son. But following the Lakers’ Game 3 win over the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference semifinals, a game that occurred hours after Bronny committed to USC, James acknowledged the possibility that he and Bronny may never play together.

“I was serious and I’m still serious about it,” James said then. “Obviously, I got to continue to keep my body and my mind fresh. I think my mind, most importantly. If my mind goes then my body will just be like, ‘OK, what are we doing?’

“But, at the end of the day, either if I am or if I’m not, I’ve done what I’ve had to do in this league and my son is going to take his journey. And whatever his journey, however his journey lays out, he’s going to do what’s best for him. … So, just because that’s my aspiration or my goal, doesn’t mean it’s his. And I’m absolutely OK with that.”

On his health:
quote:

James’ health, as well as the physical and mental toll of his first deep postseason run in three years, could be a factor. James told ESPN that he will be getting an MRI to see if he needs offseason surgery. He had initially been told he would need season-ending surgery after consulting multiple medical professionals about the tendon tear in his right foot, but he said the “the LeBron James of feet” assured him he could rehabilitate and return without a procedure. James opted to rehab and return while acknowledging that his performance would likely be impacted.

On next season's potential roster:
quote:

Once the James situation is settled — if it’s even settled before free agency — the Lakers need to focus on re-signing Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura, who were both valuable in the playoffs. Reaves and Hachimura are restricted free agents, meaning the Lakers can match any offer sheet either player signs. The Lakers intend to retain both this summer, even if it means matching their respective max offer sheets, according to multiple team sources who were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Reaves took a considerable jump this season as the third-best player on a team that made the Western Conference finals. Hachimura proved his value as a versatile forward capable of punishing switches, attacking defenses with his pull-up jumper and defending bigger players in the post. He was often the fourth-best Laker during the postseason run. The Lakers are expected to extend Hachimura a $7.7 million qualifying offer by the June 29 deadline, which would make him a restricted free agent.

It’s unclear if LeBron’s comments are merely a power move to force the Lakers’ hand into building a better roster — something he has been hesitant to do in recent seasons. For what it’s worth, Kyrie Irving and Trae Young, two All-Star-level point guards, were both sitting courtside in Los Angeles for the second time this postseason. Young, like James and Davis, is a Klutch client. The Lakers have had internal discussions about what a hypothetical trade offer for Young could look like this summer, according to multiple league sources not authorized to speak publicly.

James pushed for the Lakers to acquire Irving over the 2022 offseason and at the Feb. 9 trade deadline, as The Athletic previously reported. There is a known preference to have Irving as the third star. There are various machinations to make it work, including the Lakers creating upwards of $30-35 million in cap space by rescinding the free-agency rights of multiple players and declining multiple players’ team options. The Lakers could still retain Reaves if they signed Irving, though their depth would take a considerable hit. The Lakers could also acquire Irving in a sign-and-trade, but that would hard-cap them at $169.5 million and require the Mavericks to cooperate.

What's also interesting is when it mattered most, none of the Lakers trade acquisitions did shite.

DLO was trash.
Rui was ok I guess and mostly good in the playoffs.
Beasley and Vanderbilt were DNPs

Now those guys certainly got them to the playoffs to begin with, but at the end of the day, it was pretty much what we thought all along. They'd make the Lakers better but not a title contender.

I'll concede they got them a LOT closer than I thought they would but I think some of that was fortuitous matchups in that the Lakers got to play two teams in absolute turmoil in the Grizz and Warriors.

Would they have been able to beat Phoenix? Not sure.

He may take a “gap year” so he can play next to Bronnie.

It's the scenario you laid out earlier. Lakers making a wcf run is just miles on his legs, and not winning a title makes him question his worth.

I want Bronnie’s rights and then negotiate a trade with whatever franchise wants the LeBron retirement tour.

While it would feel good to frick over Bron, getting more assets is better.

I don’t think they are really concerned with bringing Vanderbilt back unless it’s on a super cheap deal, he got DNP coaches decision last night.

ETA: I see he’s still under contract, for a reasonable price never mind

Imagine Reaves will be back for 4 year deal for total of $80M but it MUST be oddly structured in order to "fit" for the Lakers. I've read that it's doable. Not sure I'd count on Rui being in LA next year. Might be too pricey.

They have the Bird rights to run it back with most of these guys but you have to question their long term viability for what they would pay for it.

AR15 could come back but I have to think that Jeannie lowballs him and he goes elsewhere to success like Caruso did.

He’s sitting out until Bronnie is drafted.

How's that work with the contract?

He has 1 year left on his contract, so if he sits out, when he returns in 1-2 years, would he still be under contract with the Lakers?

Only one more guaranteed right? I’m not sure that rolls over if he sits out then comes back.

If it does it will he will be traded to the club that drafts him or worse Bronnie will be traded to the Lakers.

He will play two more years if he physically can. He wants to play with Bronny.

It's a nice dream. There are a couple of reasons it might not happen.

1) LeBron's body might not cooperate. There's no guarantee at all that his foot is going to heal this summer.

2) Bronny is unlikely to actually play in the NBA in 2 years. Unless this has changed recently, most people do not currently project him to be a future first round pick after next season. Does Bronny want to sacrifice his own career? Just that he can sit on a bench for one season and watch his dad play? Because the likelihood is that he would otherwise be in the G-League.

Like most I don’t believe he’ll retire this year, but I don’t think this was for attention. I think his faith in himself is truly shaken.

He’s told himself the last few years if they could get to the playoffs he could make things happen. That is exactly what happened this year but after getting swept he sees that he’s no longer good enough to will a team to the Finals.

I kinda think its just poor timing to make a statement after a brutal series.

Id take the retirement talk if it was months from now. But he is still in the heat of the moment. I wouldnt believe him either way.

The YouTube pundits says this is LeBron playing mind games with the Lakers to try and get them to go all in so he returns, with the idea laid out being LeBron, AD, Reaves (RFA match), Max Christie, and signing Kyrie.

To do this, a number of their pieces would need to be waived or traded such as Vanderbilt. And I would be willing to take Vanderbilt for a fake 2nd to watch that fricking team implode.

surest way for that to happen is for him to retire, sit out a year, then sign a minimum deal with whoever drafts his kid
