Hayes needs minutes against teams with athletic bigs. JV and Nance are bruisers and don’t match up well with bigs that can move. Last night was a perfect example of why Jaxson needs to see minutes against certain skill set bigs.

It couldn’t have hurt, that’s for sure.

100%

We all know Jax has his problems at times, but the GM didn’t get anyone better, so Willy has to coach him up and play him in those situations.

Getting Dyson back is helpful at containing penetration (and adding Josh too), but Jax is the only guy on the roster that had a shot to match up with a long 4 like Mobley.

He ended up playing BI on him in the 4th if that says anything…our best offensive player, who isn’t known as a defensive stopper, was Willy’s secret weapon.

Hayes publicly stated he’s done playing for the Pelicans. Why he wasn’t shipped is incredible beyond belief.

This probably has a lot to do with why he isn’t and won’t be playing. Complete waste of a roster spot.

As we continued to get dominated on the boards last night this was my first thought. Like where in the hell is our athletic 7 footer who jumps through the roof?

Surely if he can’t get on the floor against teams like the Cavs, then why have him on the roster at all?

I missed this. Was thinking the same thing as OP. What a disappointment.

I'm pretty sure that no one wanted him.

Now that DG is gone, Jax is the undisputed Pels Talk Whipping Boy.

Get ready for daily Jax threads, can’t wait.

100% agree. IMO the most disappointing thing about this team at the midway point is Jaxson Hayes is still on the roster. IMO also it is a testament to how little value he has in the league that we couldn't give him away as a filler in some meaningless trade.

ETA. It's also embarrassing that Billy sits while Hayes dresses. I don't blame Billy for wanting out of NOLA.

Nobody wanted him, which how teams were throwing 2nd round picks around like nothing, is very telling.

Hell SA could’ve taken him into cap space for a Graham/Rich swap instead of taking a bunch of far out 2nd round picks, and they didn’t even want him.

There’s no doubt Jax has the size/athleticism to be one of the best big men in the league, he just doesn’t have it between the ears.

Am I crazy or was Zion providing decent rim protection before he got hurt?

You’re not crazy. Zion was doing much better as a weak side help defender and that’s critical since JV is going to struggle to stay in front on D.

However, Zion is always going to be 6-6, so his positional (just making guys shoot over him) rim defense isn’t going to be a strength, and he isn’t the swiftest lateral mover, so although his strong base is helpful and obviously he is a dynamic jumper he has his limits.

A guy with a longer body type is the more traditional rim defender for a reason and it sure would’ve been nice to pick up someone to back Zion up.

***Noticed Mike Muscala went 4-8 from 3pt with a block in his debut with the Celtics…would’ve loved to see a guy like that next to Larry last evening and see how they faired.

Yeah I get you. Seems that Zion was almost like a natural deterrent more than anything. Not many want to challenge him so they take more jumpers it seems. I have no stats to back this up. Just thinking about this on the fly.

Whatever is going on behind the scenes with Jax just needs to stop. He is on the team for the remainder of the year and was the player available that we had to have a chance of slowing down the Cav's bigs. He was good enough to start last year but somehow he now can't play at all?

I mean Jax has the defensive iq of a fricking weasel. And that was the issue last night and many nights. Defense.

I honestly thought Jax was going to get some minutes after midway through the second quarter. I thought we’d at least try that to get some type of spark but I guess they feel like it wouldn’t do anything. We got abused in the paint all night. But Cle has been smashing everyone lately.

Do you know that they didn’t try to trade him?? Should they just cut him outright?? That I would think would be incredible beyond belief.

People on here were telling me he would be getting at least 4/40 on his next contract.

His next contract will either be a 2/24 with second year as team option just in case he puts it together, or its trade friendly, or he will get a 4/20.

He’s not getting a Bagley type deal imo
