Extend Zion, get the roster to 15. The very end of the bench isn't much of a concern as long as we get off of one of Graham or Temple to make room for the new guys. Neither should play much unless its a blow out or some unfortunate injury or health and safety protocol casualties.

I like the team and would roll with just those tweaks and not add any future salary other than Zion.

I would hope that Dyson gets at least as much run as Trey got last season. Something like 14ish minutes per game. I think his defense is going to get him some playing time.

Patty Mills and Malik Monk.

Send out Graham, Naji, and Temple.

CJ/ Jose/ Patty/ Kira
BI/ Monk/ Daniels
Herb/ TM3
Zion/ Nance/ Liddell
Val/ Hayes/ Billy

Or just send out Temple and roll with the squad we have.

Extend Zion, duh.

Extend Nance, absolutely.

Extend CJ? Eh, I'd rather wait til next year.

I love having him on this team and he's absolutely vital for this team currently, but I dont understand the rush to extend him now when he's still under contract for two more years.

Why worry about staying under the tax? A lot of the top teams are in it, including GSW and Boston.

Because it is called reality. How many times have the Hornets/Pelicans been in the tax since coming to New Orleans? Unless we are a sure fire contender for a title, I do not see us venturing there.

We should put off being over the tax as long as possible, certainly this year.

Teams under the tax split the money from the tax teams, and this year could see the largest tax bills of all time. Gayle should want that money, because we are going to be unable to avoid the tax soon.

Also, you want to put off the Repeater as long as possible.

Yeah, GSW and Boston can charge double or triple for their suites compared to us, and their local TV deals are also a multiple of what Bally's is giving us. That's why they can afford to pay tax.

Small market teams don't pay tax except to contend. After this season, we will likely be a tax team for the following two years. After that, the bills will likely just get too high and we'll have to let some great players go.

Starting now, we really have a three-year window.

Which is why drafting really is absolutely crucial for the long-term competitiveness of this team.

It is all but guaranteed several of our guys we consider to be "core" guys will have to be moved eventually. And we will likely lose/trade more than one of our fan-favorite young guys like Herb/Trey/Jose once they are due for pay increases in the coming years.

Could Naji playing in summer league be a good will gesture to see if anyone might have interest in his services? Unless we have significant injuries, I don’t see him getting much PT next year.

Naji is like Billy, great for the locker room. I don't see them trading him unless he asked out for a better opportunity.

Yea I wouldn't extend him right now either. He's under contract until 23/24, he'll be 32 at the end, he probably won't be the exact same player by that time, which is fine. but extending him now two more years will probably be more expensive. I'd rather pay what his value is at the time, not what it is right now, which is high.

Oh I agree. Great guys still want to play so wasn’t sure if Naji just wanted to show case himself a little and the Pels being ok with it know they would need a roster spot.

Also as far as trading Hayes, I’m of the opinion that he will be a valuable asset off the bench in the regular season. I know we probably won’t resign him and many would like to get something for him but I think he does have value if we want to make a run next year. I don’t think the return would be all that great any way.

I like Hayes, but does he get minutes? Barring injuries, I would think Zion and Nance get most of the minutes that used to go to Hayes. Murphy could get some run at the 4 at times as well and Liddell is a possibility. Will Hayes be able to build value for a future trade?

There should be 10-15 minute a night for Hayes as the roster currently stands.

With the 4 and 5 spots, you have Zion/Nance/Jval. Murphy too, but not sure all his minutes come from there. So 96 minutes to split...just spitballing:

ZIon 32
JVal 30
Nance 22

That leaves 14 additional minutes. The rotation could also change based on matchup and hot hands. So maybe some nights Jax gets a full 15, other nights he plays less to have more minutes for Murphy or some nights no minutes.

I think the bigger question is will Hayes be able to play center this year? I think he’s too valuable to trade for a roster spot or salary cap space.

PG: CJ/Jose/Kira/ Daniels
SG: CJ/BI/Daniels/ Graham
SF: BI/Herb/Trey/ Daniels
PF: Zion/ Nance/ Liddell/ Murphy/ Herb
C: Val/ Hayes

I left out Naji and Billy on purpose to focus on our “core”

Graham, Temple, and Naji should be the 3 to move right now.

We need to know if Kira can shoot and if Hayes can play the 5. If Kira can’t shoot and Hayes can’t defend against centers then both should be moved at the deadline.

At that point we would need to replace Hayes with a true C and turn Graham/Kira/Naji into a true PG or legit scoring threat.

I think he has proved he cannot be relied upon to regularly play the 5. My biggest concern with him is building his value for a trade as it appears he may not be in the future plans for the team.
