ESPN Reporting with @BobbyMarks42: 2023-2024 NBA In-Season Tournament schedule is expected to include quarters, semis and finals in early December. Prize money: $500K per player on winning team, $200K per player on runner-up; $100K per on semifinal loser; $50K per quarter loser.

Is this going to be a Christmas tournament? Because I still don't see what this does for anybody unless it's designed to make the Christmas TV spectacle even bigger.

I really don't understand the reason for this.

Weaving this into the existing schedule also seems ridiculous.

If the league is wanting to sell this to the new TV partner paying $8 Billion a year for TV rights as premium inventory, they need to do more than dip their toe in. Make the tournament a true tournament at a single location like the Bubble or Summer League. Pay teams for missing a few home games, pay players for extra games, and put in some actual stakes for the fans. Like a supplemental 1st round pick, or maybe 1000 lottery balls, even if they aren't a lottery team.

Auto play-in spot if not already.

If in play-in, then winning the tourney gives your the 7-seed.

If in playoffs, you move up one seed.

That's all I can think of to actually make it worthwhile to teams in the playoff hunt not to rest players.

Does this tournament not count towards regular season standings?

haha is that supposed to entice the stars that we want to watch actually play in this meaningless tournament?

This will turn into a G-League tournament.
The stars in this league don't give a shite about that money, and if the stars aren't playing, then why is anyone watching it? On top of that, even the young guys that will ultimately be playing in this, if they are nicked up they aren't going to play in it either. Teams would view this as a chance to get guys more rest in the middle of the season.

These are regular season games outside of the "Finals" of the tournament. They probably made it part of the regular season so stars were more likely to play.

Like I said, if they're going to do this, do it right. Start the season a few weeks earlier and make this a winter break tournament in a single location with actual stakes for everyone from players to front offices to fans.

All this is is the leagues attempt to get players to play regular season games. Since they can’t come out and just say if you're healthy and on a roster you should play.

A lot of ppl didn’t understand the concept of the play-in, it turned out great. These are smart people so I’m willing to see how it turns out

Even more so will continue the process of superstars not playing in early season games like this and risking injury/future for small bonuses while guys who will be out there scrapping for their coin.

Should be entertaining...but don't see the stars of the league participating much.

NBA needs to recoup lost money from pandemic/BLM. They’re currently in a hiring freeze.

What they should do is a tournament of HORSE, or Slam (I'm not sure if that last one was a common game or just where I grew up).

Make the prize money high and let the players show off a bit.

European Soccer handles it just fine. Maybe not in the 1st couple of seasons, but I fully expect the tourney to handle it like European soccer clubs do.

You'll see the "B" Team playing these games unless it is a marquee matchup, where you will see the "A" squads getting the run.
