I think the pressure is there for a good start just from the fact that it looks like making the playoffs will be even tougher. You go from 10 teams vying for 8 spots to maybe 12-13 teams.

I immediately rule out Butler as Minny is talking about offering the guy an extension.

I still only see 10 that are realistic. Basically, the Lakers took the Clippers place.

I will bet a large amount of money that none of the other 5 will make it. People confuse "not tanking" with "playoff contender"

They are not the same

You will start next season with an even better roster than the one that swept Portland. Solo should be better. Niko will have had a full camp. The 7-11 bench spots should be better. Why shouldn't you be able to win early while you wait for Boogie and the right trade?

We'll see how the rest of the roster rounds out, but the Western Conference has gotten even stronger. It is an arms race and there might be some pressure to keep pace, even a little.

Obviously its always best to wait for the best deal, and the deadline usually produces that. But there's also something to be said for trying to get your team in place now for TC and start the year as fast as possible.

I guess we will see. I'm not expecting any big move.

I'm expecting Boogie and Rondo back. I'm way more interested to see if there is any other way to add to this roster beyond that.

Western Conference (right now) to me

Tier 1 (sure fire teams in the playoffs)

Warriors
Rockets

Tier 2 (teams that should be in barring something drastic)

Jazz
Pelicans
Thunder
Blazers

Tier 3 (fringe)

Spurs
Wolves
Lakers
Nuggets

Tier 4 (odds are not in their favor)

Clippers
Suns
Mavericks
Kings
Grizzlies

Which is just PR bullshite. Of course they are going to offer him a 4 year $110M extension and he is going to immediately say no thanks. It makes no sense for max players to sign an extension unless they are DPE eligble.

the pressure should be there b/c we start every season shitty. We were a .500 team until mid January when we went on that nice stretch of winning 7 of 8 then Cousins got hurt.

Year before that we loss 9 of our first 10.
Year before that we loss 11 of our first 12.
Year before that, when we made the playoffs, we had a .500 record in mid January before making a run and finishing with 45 wins.

It would be nice for a chance to start the season and be something like 15-10

Agree. And depending on Kawhi, I could move Spurs to Tier 4. Like, if he sits out or is moved for young guys.

Personally, I think Spurs and Blazers miss playoffs from last year. Denver and Lakers get in.

Dude. The Lakers added the best player on the planet. We have seen time and time again that he can play with a bunch of bums and get a team to the finals. And that team has young talent.

The Lakers are no lower than the top team in Tier 2, at worst.

Tiers 2 and 3 should be combined. Injuries will dictate standings as much as anything.

We start every year bad because there is no continuity from the year before. That won't be the case this year. Basically every guy who was in the rotation to finish the year/playoffs should be back with Payton an upgrade over Clark and maybe one more guy off the bench. A better Hill, a better Diallo, etc.

They start terrible every year because they have a bunch of injuries and/or are trying to figure out how all the guys will play together

I'd put the Wolves and Lakers with the Tier 2 teams. All of those teams in tier 2 could miss the playoffs if the wrong injury happens. And there's no way a Lebron team doesn't make the playoffs. If the Spurs don't have Kawhi, they aren't making the playoffs. The Blazers could implode this year a bit and not be playoff worthy.

Cleveland wouldn't have made the playoffs if they were in the West last year. I truly believe that.

I'd say Lakers are likely to make the playoffs this year, but using Lebrun's exploits in the Eastern Conference as an argument that he will drag these guys to the playoffs in the most loaded conference ever is not a strong one IMO

I see your point Bunch, but I also just don't have a lot of faith in the pieces around him. Lonzo isn't great and doesn't play D, Stephenson is a shell of his former self, and McGee? I reserve the right to change this as the offseason goes, but right now it's not guarantee they are in the playoffs but it's also no guarantee they are not.

I think Cleveland had more experience to get them there last year. LA is still young and raw in a lot of places.

Hell no---Lebron was a 4th seed in the East with a much better and experienced team. If the Lakers go into the season as is they will not make the playoffs. (6 of the playoff team that made it last year "struggled" to make it)

Also it's not out of the realm of possibility for Lebron to take a step back/drop off this season. He's 34.

I'll believe a Lebron James team misses the playoffs when I see it.

The year after we made the playoffs we started 1-11. We had everyone we did from the previous year starting the season AD/Ryno/EG, with Jrue on a bit of a minutes restriction and not playing back to backs, which was the same as the end of the season. The only difference between the team that was swept in the playoffs and the one that started the season was Tyreke and QPon being hurt.

Surprisingly that is one thing he did pretty damn well last season. He had a +2.5 DBPM and +2.31 DRPM. He ranked in the top of PG's for defense.
