1.) I never heard stories of Rivers work ethic being to the level of Hields. Someone feel free to enlighten me though. I'm sure he puts in work but Hield seems to be at another level.

2.) I never heard of Rivers work ethic actually producing consistent results toward improvement the way it has with Hield. Hield gets knocked for size late in high school and he adds 30-40 pounds. Told his jumper is shite and he rebuilds it and makes it his greatest strength.

Maybe they do have the same work ethic, but one guy has shown his approach is yielding far better results.

Also I agree crewz, if I am the Pelicans I put Hield through defensive, ball handling and passing drills every practice.

Tell him they want to see that part of his game improve the most.

Or just tell him he cannot do those things well and he will fix them himself like his shot...

Which is true for how many players? Or what about a guy like Skal, whom many people have dumped on for being "soft?"

quote:

Austin Rivers and Kobe Bryant both have elite work ethic. That sums up how much that skill helps predict success

It is something you would rather have than not, but it is 5% of the total equation, at most.

Yup. I hope Hield proves all the doubters wrong and surpasses expectations.

But last time I checked, they don't give out prizes for working hard in the NBA. Incredible work ethic does not guarantee ultimate success. Lots of people work very hard and don't "make it." Life isn't a fairy tale.

I am not going to judge him on All-Star appearances. It will be in incredibly difficult to make the All-Star game as a young guard considering how solidified guys like Westbrook, Curry, Thompson, and Lilliard are as experienced player selections. He will also have the small market team and Davis spotlight holding him back. The Pels will need to start dominating at the top of the conference for players like Holiday and Heild to be considered.

I just want him to come in and the Pels to start making the playoffs and competing to advance in the near term.

Rivers talked about his own work ethic more than anyone else, but it was substantiated that he was a gym rat. The problem was his shot was always a mess despite being a guard and having every advantage growing up. Shooting 65% from the charity stripe in college with his background and work ethic was a big red flag.

The only problem I have is wanting to Dump Tyreke who is talented and helps win for nothing. Okc had waiters play a big part and it wasn't a negative to their team. I am for trading him if it's a trade that help makes us better. He's not a addition by subtraction player. People are also forgetting how dedicated players are in their contract year.

It's difficult to get to the NBA without a great work ethic. So I get that.

What is impressive about Hield is that not only does he seem to stand out from the crowd in comparison to his peers but that his effort has produced consistent results. So we have a decent but of evidence that his particular work ethic is producing.

Maybe he plateaued and we will never see much in the way of a leap in any other facet of his game but I would have to say that based on all relevant history that its fairly promising that he will continue to make strong improvements.

He is a player who will not play his role in what is best for the team. His BIGGEST asset would be to come off the bench and get the 2nd unit a jolting start and being able to run wild against them.

Guess what he refuses to do? Come off the bench.

Waiters was willing to come off the bench, play hard nosed defense, and not take stupid shots. None of those 3 things apply to Tyreke.

And yes, lets have him play REALLY well in a contract year, have us sign him to some absurd max contract, and then he goes back to playing like garbage again. I rather not be the team that pays a very narrow-skillset player max money.

I disagree. If there's a sport out there where it's easier to make it without great work ethic, it's basketball. You can get by in college being more athletic and bigger than everyone else a good bit, and you can even get by with that in the NBA for a while, but it will eventually catch up with you.

YOu think Ricky Davis had a great work ethic? Probably not, although i don't really know, just assuming. Being 6'7", having elite athleticism, even for the nba, and a good 3 point shot gets you in the league. Played 12 years.

Why the hell is Austin Rivers' name even coming up in comparison to Hield? Work ethic or something, right?

Let's say that is even...

Hield was damn near a 50/40/90 player. All arguments rendered invalid.

You are absolutely right that if you are an athletic freak like Jaylen Brown or a 7 footer that can at least sort of play, you can end up in the NBA for at least a short time.

I think you are overselling how easy it is to get in the league though. Truth is most of the D-league players that will never see the NBA court could kick the crap out of 99% of the people in the world who have played basketball. I mean at capacity only 450 people in the world can be on an NBA roster. While there is roughly 4500 college basketball players in the country. Several more thousand abroad.

I don't think all 450 of them are Buddy Hield clones(which is part of what makes him so special IMO) but I think a lot of them have really solid work ethics by general human standards.
