And you only achieve that by recognizing that we are approaching the luxury tax cycle of this core and to continue past the next few years will require drafting and developing to both sustain that core, and find new core pieces to take the aging one's places.

To be fair, when you have 3 guys who can eat close to max-money or max money, you are gonna run into the issue.

Even a draft and develop team like Memphis will be in a similar situation

Come 2023-24:
Adams' and Brooks' are UFA, Ja and Clarke are RFA
Adams looks to cost another 10-15mil, Clarke is a RFA and they don't have contingencies for either yet
Brooks looks to cost another 20mil
Morant will be on a max

Not including JJJ on a 27mil contract, Melton in his last year at 8mil, and Bane on a cheap 3.8mil in his last year as well.

Those guys above alone will cost about 100mil+. Go into 2024-2025 when Bane gets paid and its gonna be a luxury tax team too.

Regardless of this, we do not need to trade anymore draft assets to get the core players for this team. We have a solid 8 man rotation when healthy, we just need to continue to develop them, draft more players to develop as well, and shuffle as it keeps going.

You need a guy like Val for the regular season to take the night in night out beating at center and play it at an elite level.

Val mainly gets ran off the floor in the playoffs, but that's when we switch to Zion at the 5 and steamroll teams.

We will never be able to get away from having a true 5, and you need a good one, but once playoff basketball starts they become obsolete. Being we are only paying Val what we are though, we have that luxury to pay him for his contribution in the regular season only, if he were making 20+ then it would be an issue.

Depending on how things work out, we may fall arse backwards into having another center.

If we end up in the top 4, we potentially end up with Chet Holmgren.

with trey’s upward trajectory and zion coming back, a 4/5 in this draft would be ideal. Then you have a plan B with hayes and don’t have to overpay him if they can’t agree on a new deal. And if hayes is expendable you might even get an asset back for him. Certainly would help if JVs backup were on a rookie scale deal

A lot of that hinges on Murphy and whether he can defend and rebound his position and thus play with both zion and JV. Certainly it looks promising

That's a great point, and you may be correct. But we don't know how those lineups with Zion at the 5 are really going to work. They looked great in very limited minutes last season. I want to see more before I have your level of confidence in that solution.

4/5 in this draft likely means Holmgren, Smith Jr, or Banchero in the top 4 or Eason in the 8-10 spot given current mocks and where our pick could land.

if they don’t get top 4 I think you have to go best available. That’s probably not going to be a big at 8, though I haven’t watched a ton of these players (just looking at the various big boards)

There is a lot of groupthink in these mocks but the general consensus is that 8-10 is the Benedict Mathurian / Johnny Smith / Tari Eason tier, meaning two 2s and a 4.

It will obviously be much more fluid on draft night especially if trades start happening and/or people rise or fall based on workouts, medical exams, etc.

You always get a Shawn Bradley type who gets over drafted based on a strong combine and someone like a Jared Sullinger who drops like a rock because of something the docs find in the exams.

I think the only "4/5" after the obvious top 3 are:

Keegan Murray
Jalen Duren
Mark Williams
Tari Eason

lots of guards in this draft, which honestly we wouldn't be bad off grabbing a guy. We're woefully thin and I think finding a rotation of quality big men might be easier to find than a solid bench guard or sniper from 3
