Herb - "no dollar amount could slow the grind"

Christian Clark article:
Is there anyone else in the league who would be tasked with guarding both Dereck Lively and De'Aaron Fox?
This is critical. As we have said, a team's best players have to lead. And Herb is our best defensive player. For him to step up and start telling his teammates what to do on defense is an important step in our long-term success on that side of the ball. Herb's good enough defensively that he can tell Zion and BI what to do. I don't think it's a coincidence that BI and Zion played poor defense when Herb was out and much better when he came back.
It amazes me that his mindset isn't "Now that I'm already a great defender, I'm focusing more on offense." Nope, he still has the viewpoint that if the defense gets stops, the offense will score enough to win.
quote:
“He just comes out of nowhere,” Pelicans center Cody Zeller said. “He flies around the court. It’s really inspiring for the rest of us to watch him play.”
Fresh off signing a four-year, $54 million deal in June, Jones is going as hard as ever. The 25-year-old forward has racked up 25 steals and 19 blocks in 12 games. The 3.67 "stocks" (steals plus blocks) he’s averaging is second in the NBA, behind only Anthony Davis of the Lakers.
quote:
Eight players in NBA history have averaged 2 steals and 1.5 blocks per game for an entire season. It’s early, but if Jones (2.1 steals and 1.6 blocks) can keep it up, he will join a list that includes names such as Hakeem Olajuwon and Shawn Marion.
“I think the biggest thing for me was after I signed, I never got complacent,” Jones said. “I know it’s not the most somebody has signed for in the NBA. But it’s still a lot of money.
"A lot of people, once they get to the first one, a lot of guys back off the gas a little bit. I just wanted to continue to work hard and show my true love for the game. There really was no dollar amount that could slow the grind down.”
quote:
“The offense clicking isn’t my biggest concern,” Jones said. "I just want guys to come out and play hard and excel on the defensive end. And give everything they have on that end. Then it will open up the world for them on the offensive end.”
The Pelicans have watched that happen in their last five games. Since Nov. 14, New Orleans is limiting opponents to 107.9 points per 100 possessions, the fourth-best mark in the NBA. It ranks second in steals (10.4) and seventh in turnovers generated (15.2) over that stretch. All of that defensive activity has translated into 19.6 fast-break points per game, more than any other team.
quote:
Jones has 14 steals and eight blocks in his last five games. The Pelicans have asked him to guard rim-running centers (Dallas’ Dereck Lively) and speedy guards (Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox). Jones has embraced every challenge thrown his way.
Is there anyone else in the league who would be tasked with guarding both Dereck Lively and De'Aaron Fox?
quote:
Green has started to describe Jones as one of the team leaders as he speaks up more. Jones is quiet by nature, but he is articulating to teammates what he is seeing on the court — especially on the defensive end.

quote:
“I always believed if I could stop somebody, I could figure out how to score," Jones said. "As long as I’m getting stops, the offensive side of the ball — you don’t think about it as much.”

I liked this quote from Clark when he tweeted out the article.
quote:
The ball moves faster than you. It does not move faster than Herb Jones.

I’m kind of blown away only 8 people have ever done this

IMO...Herb has become an EVEN better off-ball defender than he is an on-ball defender. And imo...he's obviously the best on-ball defender on the team, so this is a fairly huge development.
Having Dyson develope to the point he can play alongside Herb is a key point for the Pels to become a truly elite defensive team. Having both on the court, allows SO many variations, depending on our opponents' strength for a particular game. Having TWO guys that can effectively guard 1-4 (& even the occasional 5) just makes it a different ball game out there...on the defensive end.

I took my son who was about 8y old at the time to a Pels game. We had pretty good seats so we were close to the action. We focused on Herb for a good bit of the game bc he was learning how to really play and I knew Herb would show him essentially the game w/I the game.
That being said, I was even surprised how impactful Herb actually is. The amount of times Herb disrupts plays by jumping in passing lanes or anticipating things is really unreal. The shear amount of times he gets his fingertips on in bounds passes is crazy. Even on offense by setting screens, cutting to the basket and playing with the ball is really a thing of beauty.
If there was ever a “Tom Emanski” for basketball how to videos then Herb would definitely play the Fred McGriff role.

His BBIQ has to be off the charts. He makes so many plays because he knows what's going to happen next before it happens. It is beautiful to watch and must be hell to play against.

He’s right up there with the main reason the future looks really bright for this team. Him and Dyson together can wreck opposing backcourts with their defense, speed, basketball IQ and length.

Every time I think my appreciation can’t get any higher for Herb, he goes out and raises the bar even higher. It’s incredible.

Had a similar experience. Herb is one of the reasons it’s fun to see the team live. You can pay attention to everything a guy does and with Herb it is so so much.
Last season there was a debate about higher ceiling - herb vs Trey. I was firmly in Trey’s camp because I think he can be one of the best 3 pt shooters in the entire league.
But Herb really is throwing his hat into DPOY contention this season.
The future small ball lineup of Dyson, Hawkins, Herb, Murphy, Zion is something I want to see.

This is so true. If guys like zion and bi would truly buy in on the defensive end, it would help the overall team.
I can't believe people actually wanted to trade herb.
Trey, herb, and Dyson are nice to have in your back pocket.

if you are on a list for defensive play that includes THIS name, you are clearly doing something right... Olajuwon was probably the best defensive Center the game has ever seen

Please check out Bill Russell. And I am a huge Hakeem Fan and Celtics hater in saying that.

This defensive duo has been beautiful to watch. Teams will be happy if CJ is inserted back into the starting lineup.

Herb, Jose, trey are honestly why I love basketball as much as I do. Guys like that are so rare mentality wise it's nice go have multiple.

I love Herb but Dyson is better on ball. Dyson doesn’t foul and his man rarely gets by him. Herb is excellent, but Dyson is better at it.
Herb’s off ball and close outs are the best in the league. This is why he is a better defender than Dyson.

Just imagine how great the NBA would be if every player had the Herb mentality.

Trey is my guy but damn Herb is pretty freaking good lol.

Who played the better competition? Bill Russell was taller then 90 percent of the league and there were barely any black players. Hakeem played in the goat Era of big men and pfs. Bill Russell ain't better them hakeem

This is still Herb's biggest problem: foul trouble keeping him off the court. From BBall Index:
quote:
The top 5 in Foul Trouble %
1. Dillon Brooks
2. Jaden McDaniels
3. Herbert Jones
4. Bismack Biyombo
5. Myles Turner
200 minute min
We define foul trouble as having:
2-5 fouls in Q1
3-5 in Q2
4-5 in Q3 & Q4
5 fouls in OT

Good point...and another very good reason...why the Pels desperately need Dyson to develope alongside Herb...and relieve some of the pressure off Herb...when foul trouble rears it's ugly head.
