According to The Athletic, Griffin was extremely unhappy with the "habits" the team was displaying early in the season, and considered firing Gentry then. If someone like Ty Lue had been available, he would have fired Gentry and replaced him with Lue, but that was not a viable option.

I did NOT read this article, Jake Madison recapped it on Locked on Pels today, so if you have The Athletic go ahead and give it a read.

I have a terrible feeling Lue will be between Gentry and Monty in terms of success

1st place = Monty
2nd place = Potentially Lue

3rd place = Gentry

Lue - another guy that rode LeBron's coattails.
Bring Monty back would be a better decision.

I'm curious about the $5.5 million budget we allegedly have for a HC someone posted about yesterday from that Athletic article. Was that sourced info of our actual budget, or an assumption based on Gentry's salary?

Yeah Jake talked about this as well. I don't know, I don't have The Athletic.

I'm sure it will be talked about a bunch and we will be called cheap but 5.5 is a fine budget. We aren't going for Gregg Poppovich or even a Jay Wright.

If you're paying an up and comer or assistant, 5.5 is plenty.

The revisionist history on this board regarding Monty is staggering

I think you can get a Vanterpool, Ham, or Atkinson with that salary.

So Griffin was unhappy with the habits they were building in December, but he continued to let them build those habits all the way into August? Sounds like a failure on his part.

I agree but you also don't want a rudderless ship. If he would have hired Lue but wouldn't promote Finch, I think that says something on how they view Finch. When Gentry was fired they asked Griff about Finch being considered for the job and he said something along the lines of "He'll get head coaching interviews in the league." Not an exact quote and right before that he said "I'm not ruling anyone in or out" so he may have just been trying to not tip his hand, but I got a "Finch isn't our guy" vibe out of it.

Yeah I got the same vibe. They aren't really considering Finch.

Just my feeling, no inside info, if Griff was being 100% honest about Gentry when Griff was hired (hardly possible), this whole head coach deal with Gentry played out about like Griff would have thought most likely. After, what, 17 years as a head coach on multiple teams, Gentry’s strengths and weaknesses are ingrained and would not change much and would have been well understand by an experienced NBA executive such as Griff.

The article says they were ready to fire him before Zion came back from injury. I guess when he came back they saw a bit of potential there, but then the bubble was probably the final nail in the coffin.

Also, the salary quote is this:

"Lue's price tag could price him out of a place like New Orleans, where league sources say the team is expected to spend about 5.5 million annually on its coach. Pelicans executives would not discuss their coaching search with The Athletic."

ETA: sounds like a guess to me

I’m tired of the re-tread hiring trend that not only happens in the NBA, but other leagues as well. Organizations are so afraid of failing with unproven coaches that they settle for coaches they know aren’t going to take them over the top.

There is no sustainability in doing that. Just look at us spinning our wheels for the last 8 yrs, when Toronto and Milwaukee makes a change for an “unproven” coach. I really hope we can start becoming more competent, because those teams have proven that you can win in a small market....especially win you have been gifted a generational talent.

Pacers just fired their coach. I wonder if all these openings are going to put pressure on Griff to make the hire sooner

I think that Griffin knew Gentry well enough, but he didn't know the team well enough, especially Jrue Holiday. Griff expected Jrue to step in the role of a vocal leader who would help establish a team culture of accountability, and that was a miserable failure.

Griffin knew that Gentry wasn't the long-term answer, but he thought that he'd be OK for a year or two, but he misunderstood how badly this team would need a strong head coach who would hold players accountable.

And they are in a similar situation to the Raptors with Dwayne Casey. He’s the all time wins leader in their franchise history, but at some point you recognize that if you don’t have a LeBron or similar level talent....then you have to shake things up with a new approach.

If Griffin thought the team was heading the wrong direction in December, why not fire him then and let Finch audition for the job? He must not be high on Finch as a head coach prospect at all.
