Cancer
Posted by sportsfan225 on 11/11/25 at 5:07 pm
This is the first topic I've ever started on Pelicans Talk. I don't like to be dragged down by a lot of negativity. Why be a fan of a team if I'm miserable all the time? I'd rather stop being a fan. I've been a season ticket holder for some years, since before we drafted Zion (I dropped them this season).
I've been slow coming to this point, but I've come the feel the last 6+ season of the Zion fiasco has been a cancer to the soul of being a Pelicans fan. Every season we hope he'll be healthy and then he's not. We build a team around Z and then he's gone.
I used to be able to sell the tickets I didn't use for reasonable money but for the last few seasons, less and less, to about nothing last season. The spirit is dying.
A finger can be pointed at other things, owner, our GMs. coaches, other players, this or that trade, etc. But the Zion situation is the cancer.
Will our current GM cut out the cancer, find a miraculous cure or will all life be sucked out of being a Pels fan?

I agree LSUPilot. I don't want the Pels to leave NOLA. I'd just stop paying attention to them if I was that unhappy.

- Team mostly healthy
- Zion plays most of the games
- after about 30 games be close to .500
- by end of season be at least .500
- draft picks show promise

re: List the main reasons Griff got fired

One of my favorites.
After 6 seasons our centers are rookies, Missi and Karlo, and Olynyk. This is after giving up resources, often coming and going, for Favors, Hayes, Adams, Jonas, and Theis (did I miss anyone?).
So after 6 seasons Griff gives us at center 2 green rookies and an aging Olynyk. The stuff of championships.

How do we keep BI with his contract demands? Is he worth it to the Pels to pay the contract he wants?

Last night, I waited, waited, waited and eventually scuffled thru the bottleneck. The bottleneck I was in was walking toward the river, just about immediately after leaving arena. I thought the bottleneck was ridiculous and potentially dangerous. I asked one of the many guards enforcing the do-not-pass barricades why and he said he didn't know. I didn't observe anyone abusing the workers. My "scorn" is for whoever designed and implemented it.
Zion playing tonight against Mavs?

I haven’t seen anything. Anyone know if he’s playing? It’s second night of back to back.
re: SKC renovation plans on hold because Gayle is a deadbeat
Posted by sportsfan225 on 5/23/24 at 5:34 pm to Fun Bunch
I've been reading people attacking Gayle for being cheap for some time now. I have no insider info to form an opinion one way or another on this.
However, recently I was looking at cap space for various NBA teams for 2023-24 on Sportrac. And I see the Pels have the 12th largest player salary in the league at $177million. And I think I've seen we have the second smallest view region, Grizz are last.
I'm trying to reconcile this with the idea Gayle is cheap with 18 teams spending less.

Annoying to me is not getting the replay that I pay for thru Ballys. I usually watch the replay of the parts of games I’m interested in. Live I can get on one of the “free” streams.
Another hiccup is people have written here signal is too weak to get over antenna in Gonzales. I haven’t tried an antenna, but that would not help me with replay.

I wondered why at the end they didn’t try Herb at the 5 on Sengun. Herb was sitting on bench with Trey playing.
re: Zion named all star starter
Posted by sportsfan225 on 1/27/23 at 9:29 am to TeddyPadillac
I’m an unapologetic Pelicans homer and I’m glad Zion was named starter. And seeing the players voted Z 3rd, Markkanen 4th and Sabonis 5th, it seems to me there is justification for it. However, I’d point anyone who has issue (or not) to Oleh Kosel’s article on this topic on the bird writes this morning.

Starting to wonder if CJ is a very good shooting guard trying to a point guard. Hopefully he tightens it up.

I have no inside info or any kinda deep knowledge on the subject, but I’ve been assuming Gar Forman joining the Pels as special talent evaluator in Dec 2020 is what made difference in our 2021 draft (Trey and Herb) and targeting Jose with the two way.

Comparing playoff offensive statistics, Ingram (age 24, 2022) much better than Randle’s (age 26, 2021). Small sample size though, 6 and 5 games.
re: What is the point of starting Jax?

At least, when Zion returns, there’ll be no concern over who he replaces in starting lineup. CJ, Herb, BI, Zion and JV sounds dang good.
re: JJ now saying Griff is the reason for tampering investigations
Posted by sportsfan225 on 8/14/21 at 8:30 pm to GOP_Tiger
I’ve read many posts in multiple threads on JJ’s falling out with Griff.. And I’ll make two observations.
In all of JJ’s telling his side of the story I’ve never seen where he’s said that he was willing to give back any money back as part of any buy out. Seems I remember Aldridge gave back $6mill with his buyout. I suspect JJ was unwilling to give back any money to help facilitate what he wanted as other players have done.
Secondly, my feeling is a lot of JJ being bent out of shape had its roots in his wife giving him a hard time and not wanting to leave their house in Brooklyn. Understandable with Covid but, again my feeling, JJ was and is p…. whipped (like many of us). .

I've been wondering lately if the plan for SVG was all along to be a one or two year coach,
You don’t sign a coach to a 4 year, 5 million a year contract because you want to fire him after one year.
Although, I have wondered if it was SVG’s plan.
re: So, who can they get to be a back up center?

There’s also Will Magnay, our two way center. Don’t think he’s playing yet (visa problem maybe). He might be worth a closer look.

5 and 5 optimistically. Too much disappointment with early season poor play. New coach, new system, short preseason. If after 10, close to .500, will be in contention for playoffs.
re: Any possible way we can make a move for Steven Adams?
Posted by sportsfan225 on 11/26/20 at 9:50 am to shel311
You guys have done a great job exploring the “did we overpay” question.
Am thinking Adams will be a bigger contributor to our success under SVG than Gentry.
Much bigger emphasis on defense vs run run run.
