Griff specifically mentioned a lot of trades and FA moves are being juggled right now.

In his presser last night he mentioned there are multiple trade scenarios and FA possibilities that are up in the air and the bulk of their work is still ahead of them.

Strap in.

sounds like fun.
I gotta say, i was pretty irritated that we traded our 3 picks last night after Kira. Very happy about Kira, but i don't understand why you wouldn't make at least 1 more pick, especially in the 2nd round. WHy the hell would'nt you want to take a chance someone in the 2nd round? At worst, you don't sign them at all, and you can always give them a 2-way to avoid the roster spot situation. Sorry, i like Josh Gray, but he's not an NBA player and we need fresh meat with our 2-way players, and the draft was an easy way to fill that need.
Just will have to wait and see what happens, and i trust they know what they are doing, but i can't stand not making 2nd round picks, especially early one. To me, you have almost the same chance finding a quality player in the 30's that you do in the 20's, and you don't have to guarantee that contract unless you absolutely want to.

Great, so we’re avoiding cheap drafted talent that is heavily incentivized to stay here in favor of paying market value (or above) for other players.

Or... we’re lining up a jaw dropping trade and everyone will cry with joy.

All hail King Griff

Griff and Presti seem to be following in the footsteps of Ainge and Morey... having a lot of draft picks around to be used as ammo to get the player you really want when someone hits the market.

How effective it is can vary, as Boston in particular habitually comes up short because Ainge doesn’t want to blow his wad, but it always means you are in the conversation when someone wants out of their current team.

Trajan Langdon was responsible for scouting the draft in Brooklyn and the way Griff deferred to him last night, I'd say the same is true here. With Langdon in charge of scouting Brooklyn drafted 2 starters in the 20s. If they chose not to pick someone with 24 I don't think it's because they were "avoiding" talent.

I can understand not picking at 24, but i don't understand not making a 2nd round pick. Do they really think no one in the 2nd round had potential? I guarantee you there's at least 4 guys drafted 30-50 that will play significant minutes next year.

The only complaint I have is not taking Madar in the second for a stash...he's going to be a good pro.

The issue is this is going to be a weird season. There’s a shortened training camp and then with a compressed schedule with tons of back to backs with less time to practice. Plus the Pelicans already have a bunch of young raw players that need time and coaching to develop NAW, Jax etc.

Once you get into the late lottery or 2nd round whether a player succeeds or not largely depends on role, opportunity and development. Also once you drive a pick off the lot it loses value in most instances for trades . Given these factors I’m fine with selecting one high upside guy this year and pouring all their resources into his development while kicking the can down the road on picks for a trade or more more normal offseason. I’d have been upset if the Pels sold the picks for cash, but the just delayed the assets persevering them for the future. I’m fine with that.

In past years we know teams have asked guys they'd draft in the 2nd round if they'd take a 2 way, a lot of times they won't. I'd bet that they only had a 2 way slot available to develop a 2nd round talent and none of the guys they wanted to take at 39/42 would have accepted a 2 way.

I wanted Tyler Bey. As good as our starting forwards are, we have the worst back ups in the league. Hart (who isn't big enough), Miller (if he is healthy) and Melli is just not good depth. There is not a ton of it in FA either. I hope he has something up his sleeve..

Based off of what? That didn't happen last year.

Amassing an absurd amount of draft picks over the next 7 years translates to avoiding cheap draft talent? In what universe.

There’s two things you can do with a draft pick: 1) use it or 2) trade it.

The Pels have like 20 attempts to either pick or move a pick over the next 7 years, in particular when we will actually need cheap talent (ie when Zion and BI are on maxes).

Also: this is not the year to be developing multiple rookies.

I was thinking the same thing but the more i think about it the more I think it's for trade flexibility moving forward. Like we're doing with the Milwaukee trade. Being able to throw in 2nds in future trades might be more important to Griff than taking a chance on a young player. Especially this year with the short offseason and no summer league. Might be wrong or right, just have to wait and see.

Name every single guy picked 31-50 that played significant minutes year one for their team over the past 5 years. Now reduce that by half given this particular offseason.

I hate the fact that they cannot talk about trades until they're fully completed.

I really hope we are making a push for Bogdan Bogdanovic. He's Serbian so with Beno here I'm hoping that resonates.

S&T obviously would need to be worked out and probably would require a third team

Would this work...

Zo, Justin James, plus future 1st to Charlotte
Rozier + stuff to Sacramento
Bogdan to the Pels

Zion
Ingram
Lonzo
Redick
Hart
Kira
Melli
Hayes
NAW

That's 9 players we know for sure have on roster already, with 5 of them needing alot of 1 on 1 time working with coaches on their development. Adding more just stretches your coaching staff even thinner, which in turn hinders your players growth.
