So the pelicans got rid of Monty, only to go and hire his assistant 5 years later?

What I like about Green is that he's a defensive coach, which is still what the team needs, but he obviously excels at player relationships, which means that maybe he can get Zion and BI to buy in on that side of the ball.
When it comes down to it, that's still the necessary ingredient for us to eventually become a contender.

It’s not wrong though. Hindsight is always 2020, but Dell should’ve been gone long before Monty.

Link/Source? I haven't found much info on his personal basketball philosophy and when he was here he wasn't known for his defense. I remember someone made a "World's Most Interesting Man" themed meme of Willie while he was a Hornet "I don't pass often, but when I do I pass to the rim." because he loved to get up shots.

Monty will be the first to tell you that he wouldn't be where he is today if he didn't go through the journey he did.
Forgot what interview it was but he basically reached out to a couple former Hornets to give him some honest feedback and they basically called him micromanaging and suffocating. That he was stubborn in his ways and unwilling to really help young players along in a proactive and positive way.
Said that(along with other things) really hit hard and he decided he really needed to completely change his approach to coaching because the coach he was in the eyes of others was not the type of coach he wanted to be.

Glad its a first time head coach. New blood new ideas! Ill give him a chance.

He's going to have to bring in some pretty high level experienced Xs and Os guys to be his assistants. Preferably someone who has been a head coach in the league before. I hope they got a few guys in mind. The staffs he brings on board will be critical to his success here.

He runs the defense for Phoenix.

Some people have been speculating that Atkinson to Golden State 5 days ago happened because they knew that Mike Brown was joining Willie in NOLA. It's all speculation and reading tea leaves, but the timing fits.

quote:I was talking about his not long ago, so many people have either strong opinions and likes/dislikes or just general opinions on who the coach should be, but the majority of us couldn't really go into any detail about the Xs and Os of these coaches and theirs schemes and what they like. We just hear, say, Charles Lee is a hot name and we decide we like him or don't.
He runs the defense for Phoenix.

No you couldn't have lol.
And Gentry's offense here was not the problem, and Gentry has always been one of the best in the business at crafting offenses.
His fingerprints were all over GS's transition from a dinosaur system that was heavy on half court isolation and forcing Curry into a traditional floor general role into one of the greatest offenses of all time by incorporating the run and gun, pace heavy style of his Suns teams, the endless screens and off ball movement of his Clippers offense, with elements of the triangle from Kerr's background.
I have no clue if Green is truly any good at coaching defense as a head coach, or if he should even be credited in his assistant role, but this line of disparagement I don't even get.
