So we went and got a guy that Jonas bitched around for probably the same price of Jonas.

This is a really good fit and signing. It’s pretty easy to see his possible role here as we’ve been doing it for years. He and Larry are just about the same age and size. To do a real comparison, per 36

Theis:

13.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.8 blocks

Larry:

10.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists, .6 blocks

Difference being Theis at $3 million and Larry at $11.2.

Short story, you hope to get similar production, maybe even better rim protection at a much much better price point. And quite honestly, I think the team is out on the praying for Larry’s body to hold up business.

For the vet minimum I like the deal. He can play the small ball 5 role Larry played. Would have much rather signed Paul Reed for that role but he would have cost more than Theis and we are clearly out of money to sign players with BI still on the books. Now go trade for Walker Kessler and i’ll feel good about our center spot this year.

If the offers for BI are just absolute trash, you can't take it just to take it.

Most teams have a weakness somewhere. When your best player is a 4, having a weakness at Center is probably the best place to have a weakness at it.

You can cover it up more effectively.

Just to be clear, this isn't what I want to do at all, and I hope they make some sort of deal to get a Center.

But its also the easiest position to cover up and by committee.

Thanks for bringing a little perspective. I don't want to do this either, but you can just give away BI, especially if all you get in return is an average starting center.

Currently you have depth/talent at the 1, 2, and especially 3/4 with Zion, BI and small ball Trey that very few teams can match. If you can find a serviceable "big" big to at least take up space against Embiids and Jokers of the world you can start the season and try to move BI later.

I like Theis in the Larry Nance role. He’s a solid big off the bench.

Theis is definitely taking Nance role. probably has a better out side shot, not sure about the intangibles.

We need to make another big move.

Do we? Willie would have been happy playing Nance 35 minutes a game if he could have handled that many minutes. Getting another Theis is probably all we need and all we can afford. The only "big move" that fits if we aren't trading Ingram or CJ anytime soon is trading for Kessler, but that won't be cheap.

JV is getting paid 10 million a year and Theis is getting paid the vet minimum. I don’t think people understand that. He probably is more of the Cody Zeller role tbh.

We HAVE to have another big move coming. Right now we have the worst center rotation in the league and it isn’t even close. We have a 32 year old guy who fell out of the Clippers rotation last season and a rookie who has been playing basketball for less than five years.

Our projected starting lineup is also the worst fitting unit in the league. It features four people who want the ball, only one above average shooter, only one guy who has shown the ability to be an above average defender, and the worst starting center in the league. The current construction of our team also has our two young, homegrown wings (one a first team all defense guy and the other a guy with the potential to become a top 5 shooter in the league) on the bench. Oh yeah, and we are a tax team for the first time in franchise history.

I am not sure when the Ingram trade happens, but I am certain that the talk of Ingram coming back is posturing. There is simply no way that Griff and Bryson’s plan is to roll with this current roster into the season.

Should and have are not the same things. If the deals aren’t there he may have no choice but to wait.

Sure would be nice to just fire griff now and let someone competent deal with this.

That doesn't help you now. People seem to think good GMs can solve problems magically. Good GMs avoid problems and don't waste leverage by waiting too long to move a player.
