Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn Essentially, Mirotic has control over his future with a trade. He can't be sure that New Orleans will pick up his $12.5M option next season -- unless Chicago does it for him prior to completing the trade. It is understandable why Mirotic isn't eager to cost himself that $12.5M. 1:47 PM · Jan 30, 2018
The silver lining is this would be an issue with almost any potential trade

Do his no trade restrictions carry over if dealt?
No. Chicago picking up the option and guaranteeing his money for next year before trading him kills his veto power.
quote:
could they just pay the tax?
Well they could, but then Benson's pile of cash won't be as big. There also are team building considerations because once you become a tax team a clock starts that ramps up the tax on you each year. The Cavs were going to pay about $15 million after taxes to sign Derrick Rose to a $2.5 million contract. You don't want to be in the repeater tax. On top of that, if you cross the Apron, which is currently about $5 million above the tax line, you get restrictions on types of moves you can make. Like you can't get a player in a S&T. You also have smaller exceptions to work with like the MLE is $3 million less than it is for non taxpayers.
So it's not as simple as "why won't our rich owner pay the tax?"

Covers the Bulls for the Chicago Tribune

K.C. Johnson @KCJHoop · 11m Told Pels-Bulls potential Asik-Mirotic deal could involve another player from Pels if it happens. Mirotic’s option hasn’t been picked up yet so he has say for now.

K.C. Johnson @KCJHoop Bulls, Pelicans still in advanced discussions on Mirotic trade. Nothing finalized.

I guess I'm wondering if they just pay the tax one year, then get rid of Mirotic in a trade or let him expire and not pay the tax the following year? He has this year and next year if they pick up the option, correct?
Also, was Chicago planning on using the team option on him next year? Seems like he would be a FA anyhow?

It sucks that the deal hasn't gotten done.

According to KC Johnson, beat writer for the Bulls at the Tribune, advanced talks are still ongoing. Not dead yet.

CAnt he make a better play in FA?
I think he could but i guess the potential for injury is always there. Hard to decline guaranteed money that is on the table
if he were making $8mil he'd be more willing to risk that i assume

To clarify — The #Pelicans Mirotic deal is still on the table. Just comes down to that $12.5 million option and adding another player or two to balance the salaries of the deal.

I hope we're trying to get Grant too...
Asik, Nelson, Allen, Diallo, & a 1st for Mirotic & Grant

I’m not a GM but that seems like a fairly simple fix

stand corrected. Good job guy
I was hoping that he was cool coming to New Orleans, but can’t blame him for wanting more certainty. Pels should just have the Bulls pick up the option. I don’t understand the need for the option. If you aren’t keeping him next year, why spend the first on him?

Yeah, but it's a negotiation. We probably want to include Ajinca and nothing else. They probably want Allen and Diallo. I'm sure we'll meet in the middle. I'd like to get Grant out of this deal too as others have proposed.

great, if asik isn't traded, he's probably going to throw a towel in cunningham's face during a game.

According to Daniel Greenberg at the Sun-Times, Mirotic wants to come here and be reunited with Rondo
