Mirotic on this team would be a godsend.

Probably because Mirotic has said he likes Rondo a lot. Said he was the best teammate he's ever had.

I don't know, we all know how close he is to Bobby Portis

This points to ownership being cheap more than anything. This seems so simple.

From what I'm told:

Ideally, the #Pelicans would like to dump Asik's contract & get a player who can help them in this year's playoff chase, without taking on any significant contractual obligation for future years.

Unless they can get another star

I'm assuming by star they mean Kemba.

They’re trying to move Asik, but it takes attaching a 1st rounder to do it.

If Mirotic was only under contract for this season, it wouldn’t be an issue. It’s a 2018-19 cap problem b/c Pels can’t afford to pay Mirotic $12.5 million & retain Cousins at current cap projections.

No it doesn't. We heard the day Asik was signed that his deal was constructed to stretch after year 3. All indications are that if they couldn't trade him before this summer they'd probably stretch him this summer. If that was the tax avoidance plan with Asik's 2 year, $14 million, the same plan can be used on a Mirotic 1 year $12.5 million contract. You do pay about $1.5 million more, $4.1 vs $2.85, but you get out of it 2 years earlier and pay out $1.5 million less in total money.

I don't like that plan.

So, we want a player to fill Boogie's roll, and if that means we give away a 1st rounder for a 1 year loaner so be it. I think that's dumb. We aren't winning a championship anyhow!

Dell and Gentry kind of need to make the playoffs. So they are going to do it by hook or crook.

Sad that it is a higher priority to dump Asik's contract than to try and improve the team this year and next.

frick that. It makes no sense for this to be the sticking point. And frick Dell again for that Asik abortion.

Well I think you have to consider also that winning now is important for retaining the team's stars, which is the key to the future anyway. If Boogie resigns, it's a key piece to getting AD to stay in 2020. For Boogie to resign, we need to win. Tanking now would greatly (IMO at least) increase the chance of Boogie walking, the team sucking moving forward, and then AD eventually walking.

The best hope for the future of the team in NOLA is to get Boogie resigned and hope he can come back like before. If the path to ensuring that is making a move like this, I'm all for it.

Plus, we really need to offload Asik, so.

$11M for 4 yrs guaranteed is not bad at all for this deal

Boogie saw how the team was playing just before he got hurt. Things were clicking really well, and we were about to get some more relief in Solo. Plus we'll offer more money than other team, and he's clearly super close to AD.

I don't see how trading an asset for a rental that we want to get rid of this offseason would make Boogie MORE willing to sign. Making the deal with the plan to keep Mirotic would be a much more appealing to me if I were Boogie.

You keep saying it without seeing it.

What changed that all of a sudden the Pels HAVE to dump Asik this trade deadline?

Even if that is the case, the Bulls have $16 million in cap space. This trade could be Asik and a 1st in a straight dump and then the Bulls could get 2nds for Mirotic from another team.

It makes no sense

Exactly.

From Danny Leroux:

quote:

One of the complications with Mirotic's team option is that there could be a way for him to re-sign at a lower salary for more years (avoiding the tax) but Pelicans could not and would not commit to it now, so Mirotic bears all the risk.
