Brand isn't a 5 either.

Darko at least can be a placeholder

Brand played about 50% of his time at center last year for the Sixers.

Even though he doesn't have the height to be a long-term solution at center, he has the bulk to absorb hits from guys like Howard, Bynum, Marc Gasol, etc., that Davis would have problems with due to his comparatively slight frame.

do we realistically have a shot at signing lopez or mahini, though?

I don't see why we wouldn't be Mahinmi's first choice. He shouldn't command big money, he's familiar with Demps and the San Antonio system, there will be plenty of center minutes to go around, and he's french so he should be at least a little interested in New Orleans.

I wouldn't mind Darko. He is a decent defender and is at least a presence down low...and Monty is supposed to be good at developing post players.

I read that Mahinmi visited MIL and IND the past few days. I wonder if he will come down here?

I don't think you understand that Lopez is already better than Darko and actually has room to improve his game. If he gets better, great. If not, he's a stop gap.

Lopez isn't the physical present we need. Need essentially a half way quick fatass to put behind Bynum, Marc Gasol/ZBo, Dwight, etc. Lopez is too soft for that.

Lopez is awful. He has a terrible attitude, is soft as hell, and is useless on defense, is a terrible rebounder for a 7 footer, etc

I'm glad you said it

The Hornets FO is playing their cards close to their chest. I don't know who they are eyeing

I was going to say this. I think somebody will overpay just on "potential/name".

i hope nobody thought i'd rather darko over lopez in terms of what he provides on the court

when i heard we were eyeing kwame, i figured we were just basically punting depth at the 5.

lopez v. darko is easy

darko v. kwame is not easy

Yeah he's getting amnestied.

I would definitely put a bid in for him, but he has two years left so it would be pretty low. 2 million-ish.

The problem:

How long does the amnesty process last? Do teams have a week to put bids in? If so, it wouldn't be within the 3 day window we have before EG is matched.

I think he'd be perfect for the Hornets. Here's why:

From Hollinger's eval: While there are few rational explanations for Minnesota's offensive reliance on Milicic, he is genuinely useful at the defensive end. He was third among centers in blocks per minute and graded strongly in Synergy's stats, with his length at the rim making up for a lot of shortcomings around him. He's a disappointing rebounder and doesn't always play hard, but if the Wolves just focus on his defensive attributes and stop acting like he's Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Darko can be a helpful player.

He'd come cheap, and I think Monty would be the right kind of coach for him. The Hornets need a guy who can come off the bench and defend the post against opposing centers, and Milicic may be the most cost effective option out there.

It's 48 hours. I'm not sure when the 72 hours on Gordon is officially up, but if Darko hits the amnesty wire at 5pm today we should know by 5 on Saturday.

1. The amnesty process lasts 48 hours. If he's amnestied before the time EG's offer sheet was submitted to us yesterday, we can bid on him.

2. I think we only get him for a year, as the final year of his contract is a team option. Only guaranteed money is covered by the amnesty, AFAIK, not team options or player options.
