CJ McCollum's second act: Leading Zion Williamson and the young New Orleans Pelicans

Pretty good article about CJ and his leadership LINK
quote:
McCollum says his leadership style came from his parents. His mom emphasized the importance of communication and holding others accountable. His dad taught him that if you want to get respect from people, you have to give it back.
Sometimes, he learned, that meant having to be direct -- and blunt.
"CJ backed me up on that and then he was the person that was the a--hole," Lillard says. "He'll say what needs to be said. I'm wearing different hats with everybody on this team. CJ was just like, 'Do y'all wanna win? You B.S.-ing. You need to work on your game.' I think he'll bring that type of presence."
quote:
ON A RECENT four-game, seven-day West Coast road trip, the Pelicans had multiple team dinners, including one at an Italian spot close to their hotel in Los Angeles and a steakhouse in Sacramento. But it wasn't the location that mattered; it was the seating arrangement.
At both, McCollum was seated next to Zion Williamson, who had been away from the team when McCollum arrived in New Orleans while he recovered from a season-long foot injury. The two talked for hours, joking, bonding with one another, a duo the team hopes can be foundational for years to come.

Its not mentioned much but CJ was recently elected President of the NBA Players Union. He is a smart guy, excellent communicator, who not only has the respect of the league but also holds a little power in terms of his position. These young guys will look up to him. His term expires in 2025 at which time he is eligible to run for another 4 years, like previous 8 year president Chris Paul did.
We are very lucky to have CJ. He is probably the best person to have around Zion right now.

I have a feeling this summer will be huge for this team. I can see CJ having a ton of the guys practicing together like Jrue had, but this time it might be in NOLA.
You can just tell he’s taking this team under his wing and guiding them in the correct way/habits

People don’t recognize how big of a deal this is, and another thing in common with Brees, who served on the executive committee.

CJ has always been one of my favorite players. He would always tear the Pels up and so happy for him to have NOLA across his chest.

In that article he said he already has plans to get the entire team together in Vegas around the Summer league. And he wants to go to Zion's house to meet with him and get to know him better, and he will try to do the same for everyone on the team.

But he’s letting everyone know in a very accommodating way.

This is what a leading looks like.

Name a bigger steal of a trade in the NBA in the last few years. Good lord we struck gold with CJ. Now Zion doesn’t have to lead being so young he can just play ball. CJ is the new leader of this squad and he’s turned into a very good PG. that was my biggest fear with him playing the 2 guard all those years with Dame at the point but he’s made the transition look seamless.
