I found it odd at the time that the Pels chose to renew their deal with Bally's, knowing that this could be coming. This RSN barely worked as part of a larger Fox Sports. By itself, it's clearly crumbling. And who could buy it? Disney cannot; that's why Sinclair bought the Fox RSN in the first place (monopoly issues with ESPN). Fox certainly won't want it back. Discovery Warner is cutting, not expanding. Comcast could afford it, but wouldn't that create the same monopoly problem that ESPN had? And Viacom is not as rich as their competitors so they don't typically get into these money draining deals. That leaves the smaller companies, and who of them is in a position do take on the money pit that is Bally's?

The cable RSN model is not working, and I don't think anyone knows how to fix it. I think at some point the league will have to produce and distribute the local broadcasts. Beyond that, this is just a giant mess that is abut to get worse.

The MLB, NHL, and NBA withdrew an offer to buy the networks in December. The leagues will probably end up being the ones getting the rights back in the end. They owe about $3 Billion to the leagues and aren’t even able to make interest payments on their loans.

What happens after that is unknown. Could be direct to consumer with league pass or partnering with someone else to distribute the games.

1. Make all the games available ANYWHERE via League Pass with NO BLACKOUTS WHATSOEVER.

2. Bally's was also producing the live games (cameras, audio, announcers, etc,). So the NBA would have to take over not only distribution but also technical production. So the current Bally's employees would end up as NBA employees.

3. Maybe if Joel and AD win the $750 million powerball, they could start their own independent production company and contract their work to the NBA

That’s going to be tricky. They’ll be looking for a big bump in the national deal, so there will probably still need to be blackouts when competing with national games and not in the local market.

That's basically what the NHL has with ESPN+. The only games not on ESPN+ are the games on NHL network and TNT.

I have League Pass and also 2 Canada-wide sports network's paid streaming services. When a game is on ESPN or TNT, I am blacked out in League Pass. But USUALLY one of my sports streaming services is picking up the ESPN or TNT feed, so I can watch the game there. For tonight's game vs Cavs, it was on ESPN and NONE of my sports streaming services picked it up. So "technically" I could not watch the game.

I would pay extra for League Pass to have access to all games with no blackouts, since I'm already paying THREE times as much for my streaming services than I pay for League Pass (just so I can watch the approximately 35% of League Pass games that are blacked out due to national games).

The NBA, ESPN, TNT and other providers need to get on the same page and simplify the whole fan viewing experience. If the League Pass price was increased by 50% and if it was the sole source for watching NBA games, maybe it's possible that there could be enough revenue generated to sort out everyone's differences. A lot of revenue could also be generated through "TV commercials".

All I know, as a fan, and as a customer of the current broadcasting systems, is that their delivery of games is frustrating. I cut my cable years ago and get all my content online. They need to set up an online system that is easy to use (ALWAYS available from only one source) and at a fair price. Is that too much to ask?

Looks like NBC is going to try to make a huge offer to get the NBA back in 2024, hopefully they start being more aggressive to get local rights also

Bally’s filing bankruptcy is like Chinese Democracy by Guns N Roses. I will believe it when I see it.

CD was a running joke for years before finally escaping and being the subject of a Dr Pepper giveaway making fun of it finally escaping.

Joel, AD, Erin Summers, and Jen Hale are all team employees. They don’t work for Bally.

I’m still blacked out from Dallas Stars games on ESPN+ here in Austin.

I think the first true no blackout league will be MLS with Apple TV starting this season.

They would probably just throw RSN games on their paid Peacock service. It would suck to still have to pay a subscription to watch Pels games, but Peacock>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BSN by a looooong shot

Honestly, you pay out the arse for Bally already if you have. It’s a massive difference in the plans that have Bally and those that don’t. I’d much rather just pay $5 for the thing I watch instead of the $35/month for the thing I watch plus a bunch of other shite.

Here's a clip from one of the business journalists that's been covering this a while. LINK

TL;DW Diamond will miss their interest payment today but has 30 days to get things sorted out. By March 15 either the leagues and creditors will like the bankruptcy plan and everything continues as is, or they don't and anything can happen including leagues getting their rights back and maybe streaming games directly to fans.

So bring back CST? Didn’t they use a production truck from the 1970’s?

I already have Peacock and it’s one of my most used streaming services, so I would definitely be on board for this

A bunch of small market teams should come together and form their own broadcast conglomerate, you pay a monthly fee and choose the team you want to watch, they can share studio space and so on.
