This could be good (for the team, not Asik). If he's still out by February then it might be debilitating enough to get a medical retirement and have him come off the books. So instead of stretching or paying to dump him, he comes off the books and insurance picks up much of the bill.

Would that free up all of the cap space?

I feel so bad for this but I've never rooted more for a player to not recover quickly. Seriously, I hope he gets better and is okay. That's most important. But I selfishly want him to fully recover AFTER February.

This changes nothing on the court...feel bad for the guy, but hopefully he retires...if not, insurance should pay most of his salary, so he may become more tradeable to a bottom dweller.

Yes. Minnesota was able to do a medical retirement with Pekovic last year and he's now off their books.

Don't worry. With our medical staff he'll be dead by Thursday.

We wouldn't need to trade him. He'd be gone.

With our luck, this will be the one time our medical staff doesn't mess up

Omer Asik says he's feeling significantly better. But he says there's no timetable.

Asik said it started with a parasite and didn't start to feel normal until last month.

Has Jrue had his PC yet? I feel like he should have gone by now.

feel bad for the guy, but i'm rooting for the medical retirement. It's not like he's going to play basketball again anyway, even if he gets completely healthy.
Here's your money, get healthy, enjoy your life.

I doubt him coming off the books really helps us with cap space. We will never have cap space with Jrue/AD/Cousins making $80M, and then Solo/Moore taking up another $20M/yr for the next 3 years. Even if you just had Jrue/AD/Cousins on the books and no one else, you still don't have enough money to bring in a big time player.
We still have to find a way to trade Solo and/or Moore with some assets to get another quality player.

It's starting to look like a moot point with Asik feeling better, but if he had come off the books it would mean you don't have to trade a 1st to dump him to stay under the tax. Then you could use that 1st to try and upgrade someone like Moore.
