Well we aren't winning anything of note with the team we currently have. It's not all about staying under the tax. If we aren't going to try to upgrade our PG or Solo, then we are a 5-6 seed at best, at best, for the foreseeable future. congrats on saving money on the tax.

We still don't have a back court player that can change a game night in night out, although we are paying $45M/yr for the next 3 years for 3 guys that will never help us get to that next level.

How's this work with his salary on the books for the Pelicans?

I doubt he'll ever suit up again. Crohns is commonly associated with arthritis and osteoporosis. Definitely feel bad for the guy it'll be a tough road ahead

Something else to consider. Think about what we would've had to trade away to get Asik off the books. We trade him and he medically retires. I'm surprised it isn't going down like that, it's a very Pelicans thing to happen.

Also if he does retire do that technically make him an expiring contract??

No. We're the only team he can medically retire from for this.

Only the player's team at the time the injury or illness was discovered (or reasonably should have been discovered) can apply for this salary exclusion.

Best I can tell, you jump with hoops with the NBA to force him to be declared medically retired then you pray he can’t play in at least 10 games the next season.

If he never steps on the court again, we definitely remove the next two seasons of his contract from the books. Not sure what the effect is on the current season’s cap room.

Between his condition and the problems that but men are having getting signed right now, I don’t see him coming back even if he is miraculously cured, He’s a below average big man at a time when teams are getting smaller.

According to the rules, we can declare him medically retired if he doesn’t play another game before about April 12, which is one year after his last game played per ESPN game log.

At that point he can be waived under forced retirement.

What happened to the February deadline mentioned earlier?

All depends really. If he responds well to the medicines available then he could certainly play basketball. A whole season? No clue.

But yea it's a disease that will flair up periodically the rest of his life...sucks. And when it flairs up its pretty shitty.

As a person with Crohn's disease, I would just retire. I am 27 and feel like im 50 most of the time. The disease sucks

Seantreal Henderson of the Bills had it and was unsure if he would ever play again. He is currently serving suspension because his doctor prescribed medical marijuana to him to ease the pain. Apparently the pain can be pretty severe, and of course the NFL in their infinite wisdom was like "yeah I get it but ehhh weed ya know, so if you could just sit out the next 8 games that'd be great." He is expected to come back though, so it's not out of the question that we could see Asik again if the Pels desire such.

What is Asiks incentive to say he can play again? Even if he was healthy enough to play, he's not going to. No team would every play him b/c he just isn't good enough to get minutes in an NBA game. So why wouldn't he just not play and get the medical retirement. He gets his money and we can all move on.

Demps and Asik conspiring to commit insurance fraud isn't enough to make it happen. They need to convince independent doctors he's unhealthy enough to ever play again, a judgement which wouldn't take into consideration whether he's talented enough to ever play again.

guess i wasn't thinking of that. I'm not a fraud kind of guy. Hopefully he gets to medically retire, gets healthy, and lives happily every after, while we don't have his albatross of a contract anymore.

Crohns is a bowel disease what does it have to do with bones and joints?

But it honestly depends on how severe it is. My Brother has it and he leads a pretty normal life and is very active.
