Part of it is a prestige thing. Part of it is a “why?” thing.
Mercedes has prestige. Hocking the whole Frito Lay line has prestige. Hocking the specialty douche-flavored Ruffles? Not so much.
LeBron can get away with hocking Sprite Remix and specialty Powerade flavors. A goober like AD just looks stupid trying to do it.

AD has never been able to think for himself and he brings people in that give him horrible advice given that he is a top 5 player right now. Any good marketing campaign starts with questions about how good he would be playing and being back in Chicago then transition into what he is endorsing otherwise you get this shite show.

Or you don't even necessarily mention the product. You just answer as many questions and get as much camera time as you can while holding/eating/using the product.
You definitely DON'T tell media people you are only there to do an ad for a product, when the media (who aren't reaping any monetary benefit for reporting on said product) don't give a frick what you're pimping.

I know someone who works for red bull and said AD is a marketing robot. Like the Ron Burgundy of athletes. Where another athlete would say "hey, it is pretty stupid for me to do that" AD won't question it as long as the check clears.
