Anthony Davis has now met the super max criteria (All-NBA in 2 out of 3 seasons) and is eligible to sign the largest contract in NBA history next summer (2019). The extension projects to be worth $230 million with a cap hit in 2020-21 starting at $39.7 million.

Cousins tried to get his trade derailed because it was enough money to stay in Sacramento. Indy thought it would have been able to keep Paul George if he had qualified for it and it's so much money that Chicago sent Jimmy Butler packing so they wouldn't have to pay it. The Pels would have to take a big step back to non playoff team status for him to not sign it.

If he's smart, he signs it no matter what and then sees if we are competitive in a year or two, and then he can ask for his trade.

Pretty much. 28 is prime age to go to a contender or demand a trade before he signs that extension.

$40 million cap hit? Good lord. He's gonna count for half the cap.

And no, that is not me suggesting that we don't sign him to it.

he can’t sign that supermax with another team...only the pels. So he will sign it unless he’s just so miserable he wants out

I feel like this moves our worst case scenario to sign and trade so at least we get assets back if the worst happens and we move to rebuild

I believe he can't be traded until at least one season after signing the super max.

What are we expecting the cap to go up to in a couple years?

Maybe Anthony Davis will give the Pels a discount like Durant has given the Warriors in his prime.

not sure, but davis’ salary will be a % of the cap, 35% I believe
so if the cap goes up his salary goes up

If percentage based Max salaries rose with the cap then Boogie wouldn’t be making $18 right now. The salary and raises are based on the year you sign your deal.

But, if you sign an extension at 35%, the first year's salary of the extension isn't calculated until the cap is determined for that season.

These extensions technically get signed in advance, so change what I said from the year they are signed until the year they start. They still don’t rise and fall with the cap though.

The good thing is this gets us out of the weird situation the CBA caused where it is financially stupid to extend with a team before become a FA. There is a 0% chance he doesn't sign it, so even if he wants to leave, we will get a shitload to trade him.

Does anyone know if there are any offsets in that 35% (ie cap or tax savings)?

How many more years does this add to AD current contract?
