Free agency kicks off today at 5 pm (6 eastern)

Pels have already pretty much decided our free agency splash will be signing Herb long term, anything else will have to come from a trade.

Herb’s new contract should start at 12.4 million this year, assuming he gets the 4/53 max we are able to sign him to.

Currently our cap sheet is at 164.7 million (tax line at 165) with the following players:
CJ: $35,802,469
Zion: $34,000,000
BI: $33,833,400
Jonas: $15,435,000
Herb: $12,400,000
Larry: $10,375,000
Dyson: $5,784,120
Kira: $5,722,116
Hawkins: $4,309,560
Trey: $3,359,280
Zeller:$3,100,000
Naji: $1,930,681
Jose: $1,836,096

That leaves nothing to fill out the final 3 spots, the only thing we can really do in FA is move Kira and take back nothing to open up 5 million, or move Jonas and take back a smaller salary center. I will update this post with new numbers for any moves that get made, also will use this thread for all Free Agent movements.

Update: With the Zeller signing we are now in the tax by about 2 million.

Update: With the Temple release as expected and the EJ signing, we are 1.7 million above the tax line.

You don’t have Hawkins. He’ll make $4.3m

How much longer is Larry on the books for? If he has another year like last year, we need to get off his deal.

Dude is really good (and well worth the contract) when healthy, but you could really tell his knee was giving him problems last year.

Nance is signed for this year and next year. His contract is a good deal and in no way will effect us nor will it need to be moved.

He’s our closing 5 and plays a huge role on the team, at 10 million a year we won’t find someone better to serve that role.

I don't expect much of anything.

Maybe we make some margin moves with guys like Kira, GT, etc, or are involved in a minor S&T or something. But I think what our roster looks like right now is going to be mostly what it looks like opening day (with maybe guys 12-14) shuffled.

I think both are likely. I think that Griff will still be under a mandate to start the year under the tax. I think that if we are top-3 in the West at the trade deadline, that's probably when Gayle would give him the OK to go above the line.

Edit: if I have to guess, then I would bet that Kira goes out for two 2nd-round picks, and Jonas gets traded for Zach Collins.

10m AAY for the 60-70 games he plays is a great deal.

Just gotta hope his body holds up because the 30-40 games the 2 prior years would be murders row for us with Zion's history too

A guy I like a lot is Isaiah Jackson from Indiana. They just drafted Jarace Walker which gives them more of what they are looking for to be paired with Myles Turner and seem to be content with staying the course with him. Jackson will be RFA next year but only makes $2.6m this year and can play the 4 or 5.

That would open up over $13 million, some of which we could then use to sign a quality backup center, which would be a huge need given Collins's injury history.

then there would be no reason not to go over the tax at the beginning of the year unless I’m missing something. Tax teams are declared at the end of the year. If they are not in real contention in Feb then they’ll need to make big changes anyway and they can get below the tax then

It may not be going into effect next season, but it's 1 of the changes that the tax line takes effect at the start of the season instead of the end ro something like that?

Dump Kira for 2nds, sign EJ, Karlo and a vet minimum.

Announce Garrett Temple is transitioning to the Front Office to shift the attention away from the fact that even if it's a better fit, you lost more talent than you added.

Today probably isn't the right day with free agency but that would make for a good thread topic.

Off the top of my head, Hailburton may be the obvious choice.

Funny to read a story on that topic from a year ago:

LINK

I'm sure someone will do another one this year after free agency is over.
