The ultimate move would be if they try to make one more major move, giving away 2027 and 2029 picks and some swaps, and that doesn't work out.

They may be bad for a decade.

Similar to Rams and other franchises.... they dump the picks to get the guys they want to contend for a title.

rinse and repeat....

I kind of assume it’s all just click bait speculation and he will end up taking the biggest $$$ contract offered to him and leave the lakers.

Yeah I think he's better off on a team like the Mavs when Brunson leaves.

He's not as ball dominate like Brunson but would slide in great in a lineup with Luka

There’s really no big names that will be available for 2023 free agency. You really just have Lebron, Westbrick and Kyrie.

The next biggest guy would probably be Wiggins or Jerami Grant, but they’re both likely staying where they’re at.

Main reason I think he isn’t trying harder to get paid is due to who has the money right now and where it will be spent.

Very few teams have room right now, with the most room being the Knicks who will blow it on Brunson.

A lot of other teams who have money or could have money, like Orlando, aren’t going to be spending much because they have a ton of young players or, in San Antonio’s case, are likely to tank.

PHI can use theor TPMLE now that harden has opted out. if you are going to play for 6MM would you rather do it with embiid & harden or davis and lebron?

ROFL

quote:

When BetMGM released the betting odds for the 2023 NBA championship, the Lakers opened at 22-to-1 to win it all. Those odds were outside the top-10 and behind teams like the Denver Nuggets. It seems like bettors certainly liked the Lakers at those odds.

Currently at BetMGM, the Lakers have received over 11% of the bets and over 13% of the betting handle to win the title in 2023. Both of those numbers are the second highest of any team. Only the Golden State Warriors are getting more betting action in the early going.

As a result of the heavy Lakers action, their odds have moved. After opening at 22-to-1, the Lakers are now just 14-to-1 to win the NBA title. Those odds put them on the same level as the Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers. All of those teams made the playoffs and won at least one round this past season.

Having exercised his player option for 2022/23, Russell Westbrook will, after the moratorium, be eligible for an extension up to a maximum of four years and $221,386,600, which is more than he could get on the open market.

From Lakers beat writer Jovan Buha in The Athletic:

quote:

The Lakers have a strong interest in retaining Monk, but it will depend on both his market and the quality of 3-and-D wings available to Los Angeles, according to league sources. Players the Lakers will target with their full taxpayer midlevel exception include Otto Porter Jr., Nicolas Batum, Gary Harris, T.J. Warren, Caleb Martin, Cody Martin, Mo Bamba and Danuel House Jr., according to multiple league sources. Players the Lakers will be interested in for the partial midlevel exception or minimum contracts include Nemanja Bjelica, Jeremy Lamb, Jevon Carter and Juan Toscano-Anderson, according to league sources.

If you're tracking the Lakers' progress, they currently have the following under contract:

LeBron James
Anthony Davis
Russell Westbrook
Austin Reaves
Talen Horton-Tucker
Stanley Johnson
Kendrick Nunn
Wenyen Gabriel

That's eight guys. If they can put 2nd-round pick Max Christie on a two-way contract, they could then use their taxpayer MLE of $6.5 million on a player and still sign six guys to minimum contracts.

Or, they could split the MLE between two players and then sign five minimum players.

It appears that Monk is now unlikely, as he appears ready to sign with SAC for more $$$$. Also, with Kendrick Nunn's return from injury this season, the Lakers are more desperate for wings than they are for guards.

They aren't quite digging through the scrap heap, but it's close.

Their understandable unwillingness to burn more future draft assets to undo what LeBron has done pretty much paints them in a corner. We might actually need to do some scouting on Victor Wembanyama this year.

They will absolutely be worse this year than last. A year older for LeBron and Westbrick along with Glass Davis. The locker room is toxic and if they don't stay healthy once again, they will be a bottom 5 team in the league. I just can't see it any other way with how thin they are behind a few players that don't really mold together that well. Even when Davis/LeBron played together last season, they were .500

ETA: Now take Monk off that team and WOOF

Yeah, out of these guys listed above:

quote:

Otto Porter Jr., Nicolas Batum, Gary Harris, T.J. Warren, Caleb Martin, Cody Martin, Mo Bamba, Danuel House Jr., Nemanja Bjelica, Jeremy Lamb, Jevon Carter and Juan Toscano-Anderson

All of them have negative LEBRON ratings except Bjelica and Lamb -- and theirs aren't positive by much. So, ten of those twelve names are judged as having been below-average players last season.

Also, I don't think a lot of those guys are going to be interested in the Lakers. I've seen a rumor that Batum is returning to the Clippers, and the Warriors already regularly pay the repeater tax anyway, so why wouldn't they run it back and pay Porter Jr and Bjelica to return? Bamba, I think, is going to get offers above the TPMLE of $6.5 million.

I'm really curious to see what happens tonight -- to see if it's as bad for the Lakers as I think it will be.

Similar to my thoughts.

Most of the league is actively getting better (or attempting to in Sacramento’s case).

The Lakers are standing still or regressing with little way to improve.

About the only other team which looks to be significantly worse than last year as of now is San Antonio.

If they run it back with Westbrook and a motley crew of vets, that is a potential bottom five team.

If they flip Westbrook for Kyrie or a bunch of supporting players on bad contracts like Buddy Hield, their floor goes up to probably a bottom ten team.

Add Max Christie to the above and you have an objectively bad team, the top line guys notwithstanding.

That team doesn’t have a true center. When Davis isn’t on the court they are guarding Jokic/Gobert/Ayton/Towns/ Jonas with Lebron or Wenyen Gabriel. That is an extremely small roster and is going to get crushed in the paint.

The best wing player and perimeter defender in that group is . . . Stanley Johnson. There isn’t even a second best wing defender worth mentioning.

That roster has no three point shooting. The best 3P shooters for the lakers last season were Monk, Avery Bradley, Carmelo Anthony. A healthy nunn will replace some of what they lose with monk and maybe they bring Melo back for the vet minimum.

It’s just a lot of issues to fix with a $6.4 TPMLE and minimum vet minimums. Even assuming good health from the three stars it’s a very poor defensive team with maybe the worst bench in basketball.

Please sweet baby Jesus, don’t let someone bail out the Lakers with a Westbrook trade.
