Report: Lakers Have 'Palpable Fear' of Pelicans Pick Swap amid Wembanyama Sweepstakes

As the Los Angeles Lakers continue their tailspin, there is reportedly concern inside the organization that they could wind up winning the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes—just not for themselves.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported there is "palpable fear" within the Lakers organization over the 2023 pick swap they owe the New Orleans Pelicans. The Lakers (3-10) would be among the four teams with the best odds of winning the lottery and landing Wembanyama if the season ended today.

...While it's unlikely many Lakers fans would give away the 2020 championship, it's becoming increasingly apparent the Pelicans were the long-term winners of the Davis blockbuster. Whereas New Orleans has built a strong young core of talent that should compete for playoff spots for years to come, the Lakers have gotten one season of true superstar production from Davis in an otherwise disappointing tenure.

It's become increasingly apparent that Davis is more of a second fiddle on a championship team than a player capable of carrying the torch in a post-LeBron James era. The strain is already showing with James beginning to lose his battle with Father Time in Year 20.

The interesting thing about that is that they can do absolutely nothing about it. Not sure what kind of report that is

The real shame in this is that if there was only some person or group or fanbase that knew this and were screaming it for all to hear in the moment that it happened...

I thought the bubble ring made the whole trade worth it. Guess not.

They thought it was sour grapes on our part and that the organization failed him rather than vice versa.

Dell made some mistakes but a number of them were directly tied to AD being unwilling to play the 5 for any length of time, killing our spacing because we couldn’t afford to bring in a unicorn (rim protector / 3 point shooter) to cover his deficiencies.

No way Lonnie Walker can play this consistent right? Even so he’s only on a 1 year deal I think. Another Malik Monk situation.

Dell was trash but I think it is crystal clear now that AD was never capable of being the leader of a championship team, in the way he was labeled a once-in-a-generation talent that would alter the league.

And part of that is what you said. He was too physically and mentally weak to embrace the role that he was best suited for which was 5.

meh I think him not really wanting to be in NOLA had something to play into that as well.

Many top tier players want to get out of the small markets and think they don't belong there....

Sucks, but just how it goes most of the time.

The irony is that he's finally doing that for the first time in his career, and he'd be a serious contender for DPOY if the Lakers' record was better.

Again, this is what is coming for the Lakers next month. We just need to be patient to wait for the implosion.

I see about 4-5 wins at most on there barring the unexpected.

Charlotte, Detroit, Orlando main ones that pop out. It’s definitely a gauntlet that could break them.

Washington is iffy. But those three are the main possibilities I see while the Bucks, Suns, etc, will likely bend them over.

Kuz will drop 30 on them. I have no doubts.

Orlando is young enough to run them out of the gym

Toni last game was reminiscent of New Orleans AD. If the offense runs through him more and less through James I worry the Lakers will begin to win games at a higher clip. Maybe win 30+ (max 32)

I like the hole they’ve dug themselves and love the palpable fear. The Pelicans are living rent free in LakerLand . Here’s to hoping their December schedule break them bitches

If the offense runs through AD, it will only last a week before he loses two months to a hangnail.

Myles Turner may be going to LA soon… as a Clipper.

Apparently the Clips are shopping for a big and don’t mind paying the tax to keep
Him next season.

Max Christie entered health & safety protocols today, per the Lakers.

Hmm ... I wonder if he gave others in the locker room COVID before he figured out that he had it.

Oh, that would be great. I could spend half a day reading responses from Laker fans if that happened
