I guess it's a guilty pleasure of mine, but this is one of my favorite genres of all time.

for what it's worth, I define this music as the softer rock of the 90s (ie not grunge, hard rock, nu-metal, pop-punk etc.) that was especially popular during the mid to late 90s. additionally, the popularity of the band is mostly specific to the 90s; so no U2, RHCP, etc.

heres my top 10...
1. bittersweet symphony - verve
2. wonder wall - oasis
3. iris - goo goo dolls
4. closing time - semisonic
5. fade into you - mazzy star
6. jumper-3eb
7. glycerine - bush
8. champagne supernova - oasis
9. the freshmen - verve pipe
10. color blind - counting crows

others of note- crash and burn, save tonight, inside out, breakfast at Tiffanys, two princes, tubthumping, sex and candy

I was born in the mid-90s but that is still one of my favorite genres of music. I am not sure I fully understand the parameters you are trying to set, but here we go (in no particular order):

1) Santa Monica - Everclear
2) What I Got - Sublime
3) Iris - Goo Goo Dolls
4) Good - Better Than Ezra
5) Push/3AM - Matchbox 20
6) Mr. Jones - Counting Crows
7) Meet Virginia - Train
8) My Own Worst Enemy - LIT
9) Run-Around - Blues Traveler
10) Semi-Charmed Life - 3EB

Green Day is one of my favorite bands of all time and I would have put a few songs by them on the list but I figured they were too punk to be classified as "softer rock".

I was browsing YouTube last night listening to this stuff, and there’s so many popular songs from that era that all have the same sound.

Based on your list, I think for the most part you kinda get the parameters I was trying to set.

I love Green Day and sublime too, but to me they’re definitely outside the genre I was referring to.

I think iris by goo goo dolls is the song and sound that best represents the genre.

6) Mr. Jones - Counting Crows

If I had to rank Counting Crows songs, "Mr. Jones" might not be the very last one I list, but certainly one of the last five. I hate that song so very very much. And I actually really like Counting Crows.

Great call on "What I Got", though. That one makes my top ten as well.

I can't leave Smells Like Teen Spirity off my list.

Run-around might crack my top ten as well.

Bittersweet Symphony makes the cut

Tonight Tonight is on there.

I'm about halfway there.

Most Green Day would be outside the category, but I think Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) fits the category. I'd put it in a top ten of this category too. It's massively overplayed, but all these songs are and it's as anthemic as anything other than maybe Wonderwall.

There are some pretty good lists going on, but I'd toss U2's One into the mix too.

I hated the goo goo dolls.

Bush, Oasis, 3eb, Counting Crows were solid through.
