That song catches a lot of crap, and I don't care for it either, but lyrically it's not a bad song. I think it was written as a hard driving guitar song, similar to Black Dog, or maybe a George Thorogood type thing, and somebody got the idea to arrange it for vocal harmonies and crap and messed it up. " We built this city on rock N roll" is a pretty damn good lyrical hook.
I think it was a total troll by them.

The worst song was written and performed by Lee Greenwood.

The cheesy-arse lyrics are the part that irritates me the most.

I nominate Kid Rock's "All Summer Long."

I think they only seem cheesy because of the treatment. They tried to make something profound out of something that wasn't meant to be that way. We built this city on rock'n roll- we built this city on rock'n roll..if you do the song Chuck berry punk style and just plow through the lyrics, it works pretty well. Maybe like Axl said above, maybe they meant it as a troll, it was a swipe at the city of San Francisco at the time.

I think that the band's sound changed every time that they changed the name of the band. Everything that they released as "Starship" sounded like 80s cheese.

I'm not sure that I've ever heard the actual song but anything titled "Honkytonk Bodonkadonk" has to be pretty bad. The same goes for a song about a red solo cup and/or how your girlfriend thinks that your tractor is sexy.

I don't bother considering "bro-country" tunes when contemplating the worst song ever. It's punching-down.

Other nominees include...

Taylor Swift, "You Need to Calm Down." A piss-poor effort by an otherwise talented songwriter.

Arcade Fire, "Reflektor." Even a David Bowie cameo can't save this tune, with lyrics like, "I thought I'd found a connector, but it was just a reflector."

Lou Reed and Metallica, "Brandenburg Gate." I love Metallica. I hate this song. Hearing James Hetfield bellowing about a "SMALL TOWN GIIRRRRLL..." for minutes on-end is embarrassing.

My vote for worst song ever goes to We Built This City by Starship.

I figured someone would mention this song as it was a fad at one point to hate this song.

But for me, this is not even my least favorite song to ever hit number 1, much less worst song ever (as mentioned above, The Shaggs are tough to beat here).

The final result is not a great track, for sure. It feels contradictory, complaining about corporations yet sounding like "corporate pop". But the song itself has quite a bit more substance to it, if you know the backstory. The original lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin.... yeah, THAT Bernie Taupin. He shopped around the lyrics looking for someone to write the music. Martin Page recorded a demo version. (The link below is supposed to be the demo, but some of the stories Ive heard don't line up... unclear)

We Built This City- Demo

The lyrics are about the disappearance of live music venues in Los Angeles. I think part of that message was lost when Starship, a Bay area band, recorded it (not to mention the DJ talking about San Francisco in the bridge). For me, looking at the lyrics through the lens of the disappearing live music clubs gives more insight to the real meaning. It's not a celebration but a lamentation of what is lost. In some ways, it is a descendant of "For What It's Worth". Albeit, a somewhat watered down descendant, nowhere near as well done and powerful as that classic.

I think the evaluation of the song is also affected by the fact that Starship was the remnants of Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship. The first band one of the legends of the 60s, the second a successful rawk band of the 70s and early 80s. The change is quite abrupt.

For me, Id rather listen to this 100 times than the Macarena or (You're) Having My Baby (the music is fine, the lyrics... wow) or Informer. All hit number 1 in the US.

Zombie - Cranberries (the cover sucks too, it is a bad song)

Just awful. Like fingernails on a chalkboard. I don't know how anyone can stomach listening to that woman wail like she has a combined case of whooping cough and asthma. I can't listen to it.

Yeah, none of that makes a lick of difference to me, that song sucks, always has, always will. It's up there with The Black Eyed Peas "My Humps" for dumbest lyric delivered terribly.

I unironically like this song. It’s definitely not in Riley’s Top 5 but it’s still solid.

I wish even cars had truckbeds is obviously a horrible line, and I don’t like that the cooler full of bud light line, but I definitely relate to the rest of it.

“I wish everybody overseas was gonna make it home, I wish country music still got played on country radio” gets me every time and I’m not ashamed to say it.

The live version is far superior to the album version btw.

Granted it's no Disco Duck or Heart's version of All I Want To Do Is Make Love to You (A song about a woman looking for an anonymous sex partner to get her pregnant). O_o
