Winger V Metallica

I saw this question on the book of faces….was Winger better than Metallica from a musical standpoint.
I got to thinking about.
So, I enjoy some songs from both groups but admittedly I’m not a big fan of either. However, when I looked closely at some of that Winger material, I was kinda lowkey impressed.
Several is those songs have really strong bridges and even some solid key changes. The vocals and harmonies are solid and the guitar player for Winger was certified bad arse
Thoughts?

I'm not even a huge Metallica fan, and yet I'm pretty sure I'm being trolled here.

The guys in Winger are all amazing musicians. Their sound & image will always let them be put in the hair/glam category. You can't even compare them to Metallica. Totally different type of music.

For what it’s worth, r/HairMetal (which I read fairly frequently, despite not being a big fan of the genre
) has a lot of respect for Winger, at least as musicians. I can’t vouch for the talent (as much as I love music, I don’t have a musical bone in my body), but you’re not the first person to take note of this.
And, of course, you can have immense talent and still make shitty music. Off the top of my head: “Dancing in the Street” as done by Jagger and Bowie, anyone?

That's just because of what you remember Winger for - being one of the last bands of the hair era and getting clowned by Beavis and Butthead. If you are approaching it from an overall popularity standpoint, obviously Metallica was way bigger than Winger. From a technical standpoint, Winger were the better musicians. Winger was formed in the late 80's, but Reb Beach is still considered one of the best guitarists of the entire hair era. Kip Winger himself is an accomplished bassist and classical composer, and has several concertos and symphonies to his credit. The other members of Winger were all known session musicians before Winger was formed.
Rick Beato has a great interview with Kip from a couple years ago.

That's all great and everything. But they still played in... Winger.

I put a little effort into to this topic since OP has some street cred on this board. I just can't get away from their look and MTV overplayed songs. Each musician is incredibly talented but together they created a prime example of one of the most banal, cliched bands of the worst genres of music ever. Unfortunately for them, they can't escape that.

Every word of this is correct...except the "worst genre" bit.

Yea, I know I am fighting a very uphill battle so I won't try to convince anyone further. For me personally the hair era was what I grew up with, and had some very talented guitar players IMO.

Winger were a pop metal band populated by hardcore, high-quality musicians who put out a number of good songs.
Beach's work on Headed for a Heartbreak is incredible.
My favorite is Hungry.

At least we can blame it on cocaine or something so when we look back, it's not totally a "WTF was that period?" Outside of being a little bit nostalgic for it, it was pretty bad though. It took good bands and turned them into a formulated mockery.

A lesser known song of theirs is Time To Surrender. It's got awesome rhythm riffs IMO.

Saw Winger with Cinderella and BulletBoys in the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson back on Sunday, April 2, 1989, my junior year in high school. I got in at like 3 in the morning and had to go to school the next day because of baseball practice. I liked Winger the best of all 3 bands and sported this bad boy at school the next day.
