I'm a son volt fan. I would put "Windfall", "tear stained eye", and "cocaine and ashes" up against any of the best wilco songs.

Uncle Tupelo

/thread

ETA: Son Volt. I was in college from 95-2000 (victory lap). Son Volt is seared into my brain. Wilco-not so much.

LIve at ACL 1996

For some strange reason, I like Son Volt, but can't stand Wilco (I've tried).

Since Son Volt is one of my favorite bands, they easily win. (like Wilco also).

Son Volt by a wide margin.

I prefer Wilco's work but SV's Trace might be my favorite of them all.

I think the real discussion is SV vs UT not wilco.

I like Son Volt, but I love Wilco. Wilco's sound is much more rounded, and interesting. It's not even close for me.

It's strange to me that Son Volt is my favorite, but I prefer Tweedy's UT songs to Jay's. I place AM up there with the best of all, but nothing after that interests me that much from Wilco. I like Pecan Pie from Golden Smog and Ballad of the Opening Band by Tweedy more than the rest of Wilco's work.

I like them both but I like Wilco better. I'm not sure exactly why but Nels Cline might be a big part of it. Wilco seems more progressive or experimental than SV so that's probably part of it too.

Also I went to see SV at a smallish music festival we have here, called Meadowgrass. The venue is a big tent in a field out in the woods. SV was the headliner one year. They were really good but Jay was sort of dismissive about the venue. Kept referring to it as a clown tent -- stuff like that. Seemed like there were a lot of places he'd rather be. I can't blame him too much but I thought it was a bit unprofessional. If you don't like the venue you're playing in, get mad at your booking agent, not the people that actually paid money to come see you perform.

I love Wilco so I need to listen to SV if the comparison is being drawn. That said, Wilco already has it locked IMO. Glenn Kotche is one of the best living percussionists, Nels Cline is a top 50 guitarist of all time, and Jeff Tweedy's lyricism is up there with the greats.

For a band with such little output, UT is up there for one of my favorites of all time... When they broke up, everyone I know (including me) thought Son Volt was destined to be the bigger/better band.. That held true for the first records... but IMO, Wilco has surpassed them in every way... including live, where SV (Farrar sole even worse) can be a snooze fest at times...

For me it's Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, and Wilco. Something about Wilco that I just never got. That's not to say that I don't enjoy them, because I do. But, only in small doses. Maybe it has something to do with the idea that anything Wilco was the hipster anthem when I was in school and it wore thin pretty quick.

Son Volt will be more in line with A.M. If comparing the top couple of songs by each band, I'd prefer Son Volt, but Wilco's entire collection is far better. That said, "Trace" is on of my favorite albums of all time.

This is my feeling as well. Wilco risks quite a bit more and tries to do more than SV. SV stays in their groove and does a great job with it.

All that being said, the best days of Wilco (as far as their albums) has passed, as far as I"m concerned. I'm just not a huge fan of anything they've put out since Sky Blue Sky (though I did enjoy Star Wars quite a bit, it didn't have staying power).

I still enjoy Wilco more, but this is absolutely true.
