re: Why wasn’t David Bowie popular in America?

I thought Drake was Canadian?
Coldplay and Ed Sheeran are from the UK but still have been popular enough to have had a number one album in America.
I would like to know about these big American acts. I find it hard to believe there were 56 great American albums better than Hunky Dory in that particular week.

More sales doesn’t mean better. And I’d bet there were other British acts in the chart. Kafka pointed out Hunky Dory didn’t chart in the UK until after Ziggy Stardust was released

Especially with albums being promoted on the internet and social media in 1971.

Kafka has forgotten more about music than you'll ever know.
You're looking more like a fool with every post you make.

He's legendary in San Antonio. He's got a frickin' style of knife named after him for Pete's sake.

That list about artists without a number one album is from 2014. So why wasn’t Bowie on that if he was popular?
The fact he could not even make that list proves my point he was not very popular.

Coldplay, Nickelback, and Limp Bizkit all have had number 1 albums in UK. Why do y'all like shitty music?
Posted on 5/2/18 at 11:34 am to Socrates Johnson
Coldplay are liked by nerds over here. The type who buy one or two albums a year.
Limp Bizkit were big for about a year and then disappeared. Certainly not considered rock gods like they are in America.
Nickelback had one big song here. The album probably got a boost because of that and ended up at number one for a week or two.

He was listing other artists beside Bowie that didn’t have #1 albums but were popular

One can be very popular without having the #1 album. You are reaching an illogical conclusion.

Hunky Dory peaked at number 57 in America. He dies and a week later his new album goes to number one. I think it is safe to say Americans jumped on the Bowie bandwagon. The best career move an artist can make is die. Especially in America.
Wait....you're hinging your argument on an album that was released in 1971? The same album that, as already pointed out by another poster, didn't even gain traction in the UK until after his next album was released? Yeah, definitely a troll thread.
In any case, Hunky Dory was/is platinum in the US, and who knows how many more copies it's sold since the record label last applied for certification.
And like I'd already mentioned, who the frick cares about chart positions from the 70's? I used the Van Halen debut as a prime example (peaked at #19, yet sold 10+ million copies). Charts, shmarts.

Of course people bought Bowie after he died. I just find it a bit of a coincidence that his most popular album is the one after he died and that none of the great stuff he released in the 70s is unknown in America.
And I have been to America 3 times.
This whole statement is weird, uninformed, and incoherent.

This doesn't make any sense. Try to edit your own comments before posting so we at least know what you're attempting to say.

Fun fact: Hunky Dory is so popular with American music aficionados that there's actually a bar here in Houston named after the album. And yes, it was opened before he died.

Please don't ever mention David Bowie in the same sentence with Phish again.

You know what I was trying to stay. Stop nitpicking.
I went to edit it but was too late.
People are not understanding what I mean about the article about artists without number one albums. Or choosing not to because it ruins their agenda.
