"Fame" was a number 1 single. Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, and Station To Station all made the top 10 albums chart.

And according to Wiki, the Hunky Dory you keep citing failed to chart in the UK on first release, only selling after Bowie's breakthrough w/Ziggy Stardust.

In the mid '70s, David Bowie was one of the bigest solo rock acts in America.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree.

You can get top 10 albums by having a moderate cult fan base. I like quite a few acts who easily get top 10 albums but I would never describe them as popular.

Fame probably got to number one because it involved John Lennon.

I don’t think you understand how to use this phrase in context.

Maybe try the soccer board.

I don't know OP

David Bowie is widely regarded as one of Phish's top 5 or so jam vehicles, with some really fantastic versions in 94 and 95

Tiger, I have been on the Soccer board. Americans are even more clueless about that than they are about music.

Hahaha, not in the 70s. Bowie even made multiple tv appearances one singing with Bing Crosby on a Christmas special. He was very well respected in America and one of the biggest stars of the 70s/80s.

As for the post death bump, it happens with every artist, see Prince and MJ.

You're over your head here.

You are the one over your head.

The great thing about the internet is that I can find facts and figures that back up my argument.

Bowie had a 45 year career and released a lot of albums. You would think if he was as popular as you guys are claiming then at one point he would have had a number one album.

The Greatful Dead and Phish are two of the biggest live acts of all time. How many number one albums or even hit singles do you think they have between them?

Not sure how old you are, but Bowie was hugely popular in the 70's. By the 80's he was a mainstream force.

I really don't care how many albums he sold. Everyone knew who he was and respected him.

He's either:

1) a foreign troll fattening up a thin post count
2) too unfamilar with English understand the numerous rebuttals
or 3) unfamilar with how pop music skews the American music charts

One more time, serious musicians this side of the pond, very often have incredible success while not topping the charts. It's a big country, it's incredibly diverse, and the longevity of Bowie's US popularity speaks volumes more than your misconceived notions.

(BTW - enjoy your stay)

That’s a poor metric for popularity especially for the 70s 80s. Men at Work had the #1 album for 15 weeks I don’t think they were as popular as Bowie and viewed as basically a 1 or maybe 2 hit wonder now

David Bowie himself was more popular than his music. That is my guess. For example, maybe it was more of him being a cultural icon than a music icon. Many people are more famous for being themselves than for their music. David Bowie was very famous is the United States but he was competing with huge America acts at the time. Much like some of our artist (from U.S.A) more than likely, had lower chart numbers than David Bowie in the UK at that time. For example, right now in the UK the biggest song is One Kiss by Calvin Harris but in the U.S. it is a song by Drake. What makes these artists different? One is from the USA and the other, U.K. Same goes for albums, songs and movies
