Why wasn’t David Bowie popular in America?

One of the most important artists of all time but was never really popular in America.

I read he never achieved a number 1 album there in his lifetime but Coldplay, Nickelback and Limp Bizkit all have.

Very strange. I thought Bowie was known everywhere.

He sold millions of albums here and had numerous radio hits.

Stalin, Dancing in the street with Mick Jagger does not count. And is cheesy anyway. No wonder that done well in America.

Albums are what define an act’s popularity anyway. And Bowie never had a number one album in his lifetime. He died and suddenly his posthumous album got to number one.

Americans jumping on the bandwagon after his death.

He was a little too edgy for mainstream americans.

Van Halen's debut peaked at #19, and it's sold 10+ million copies. Pre-Sounscan era.

The chart criteria has changed, and if Bowie's albums were released during the Soundscan era, there's no doubt he would've gotten a few number 1's....

Any flash in the pan can have a number one album. How's Limp Bizkit's career doing today? Bowie had long term success.

Because he was afraid of Americans.

He had multiple #1 singles, multiple top 10 albums, 5 platinum albums and 9 gold. Saying he wasn't popular in America is patently false statement. Maybe he wasn't quite as popular here as he was in his homeland is what you were trying to say.

Quite the contrary. He was very influential, even before he broke though commercially in the early 80s.

'Let's Dance' went platinum in 1983. The title track and China Girl were big hits, and so too was Modern Love. I was 12/13 at the time and I remember the songs being all over the radio and MTV.

Another hit was 'I'm Afraid of Americans'. Was a hot number on MTV in 1995. I really dug that tune and the video.

And that's just the ones that appealed to me. He had lots of other hit songs that didn't float my boat, but he was still very popular and always taken very seriously.

Hunky Dory peaked at number 57 in America.

He dies and a week later his new album goes to number one.

I think it is safe to say Americans jumped on the Bowie bandwagon. The best career move an artist can make is die. Especially in America.

No one else around the world bought any Bowie stuff after he died I suppose?

I'm guessing you are about 15 and have never been here.

Either that or a really good troll.

Bowie was a major star in the US in the '70s.

In fact you can make a case that in one sense he was more "popular" than Led Zeppelin. Obviously Zep out did him in record sales, but like The Beatles Bowie was a multimedia star, not only selling records but influencing fashion and giving glib, colorful interviews for print and TV. He was a media presence in a way LZ never was.

Part of the confusion about Bowie may be due to the fact that he had such an odd career. A superstar from roughly '73-7, then he had some sort of falling out w/his manager, who was taking a huge % of his earnings. Bowie then went through a lower-profile period of less-commercial music and even acting on Broadway.

Once the management contract expired, he was back to making crowd-pleasing records like "Let's Dance" and "Modern Love".

Of course people bought Bowie after he died. I just find it a bit of a coincidence that his most popular album is the one after he died and that none of the great stuff he released in the 70s is unknown in America.

And I have been to America 3 times.

Everyone gets a post death bump, musicians, authors, actors, etc. Bowie selling a few more albums in the weeks after he died isn't a surprise.

Kafka, he was a major star in the 70s? Hunky Dory reached 57.
