Why is Brad Paisley not as highly regarded as some of his other peers in country music?

He has scored 35 Top 10 singles on the US Billboard Country Airplay chart, 20 of which have reached number one. He set a new record in 2009 for the most consecutive singles (10) reaching the top spot on that chart.
He never quite got the notoriety of a George Strait, Alan Jackson or Garth Brooks, but doesn’t seem to have ever gotten the popularity of a Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs or some of the other younger up and coming stars.
Was his heyday in the early to mid 2000’s just not relevant enough?

I’ve often wondered the same thing. I listened to his 2010 album “Hits Alive” so much back in the day. So many good ones on it such as “Celebrity,” “Then,” “Alcohol,” “She’s Everything,” “Online,” “I’m still a Guy,” “Whiskey Lullaby,” “Water,” “American Saturday Night,” and “Letter To Me.”

Songs like "Ticks" take away form his good stuff. He has really written some great songs but also released a lot of unnecessary crap. Hell of a guitar player as well.

He came around when country began to go through changes and it wasn't good.
The 90s was a monster decade for country music.
He just didn't stand out from his competition.

Not a fan
However do
That was a pivotal juncture in country music when CMT and the hand me awards began taking center stage.

I like Paisley overall. Has some great songs but yes he has some stinkers too. I agree he's a hell of a guitar player too.

Well, he never got to the level of those guys.
I would say he’s very highly regarded though. Everyone knows he’s one of the best guitarists on the planet.

So just unlucky with the timing of when he became popular?

"Ticks" slander? Dang...
I think that is one of the things that actually tied him to the previous generation greats. They weren't afraid to do a tongue-in-cheek/wink-wink/goofy song. We can comb through all the greats catalogues and they are all there. Brad is another level guitar player, in the town with some of the greatest to ever do it. I think his general popularity got slightly eclipsed by Rascal Flatts just because they were inescapable in that time frame. He also had a very good voice, but not a stand above the pack voice. He admitted in his book he approached his career as not thinking he should sing his songs until he was talked into it.

Good point about Rascal Flatts. From around 2004-2012 they were just about the biggest act in all of country music.

I think it’s because he sang that cringe woke song about the future or whatever
It’s sad to me how the guys who could be good artists become woke in country and us non deviant types get stuck with guys like Jason aldean

I think the difference is he went a little overboard with them. All of the greats can do a couple of tongue in cheek songs - Cash did boy named Sue and One Piece at a Time - but Brad kinda had a run of them (Ticks, Fishing Song, Online, Celebrity) and it kinda got hard to see the forest for the trees.
His early stuff - Didn't Have to Be, We Danced - was top notch.

I’ve always liked him and been very jealous because he’s married to Kimberly Williams

Really liked Brad
Some of his stuff is cringe but his good stuff is better than most anyone else in country music from that era
I always get emotional listening to “letter to me” man it just hits right in the feels and takes me back to my hometown

He got too cheesy and then he jumped on the politically correct/ white knighting train when Obama and occupy wall street and all that crap started.
He started out good but like most artists who fake it til they make it he fits the mold.
His voice is good but doesnt stand out, hell of a guitar player but so is Keith Urban (I would never go to a Keith Urban concert).

That’s a good observation. Do you think his style changed around 2005 or so?

I don't believe he would ever hit the A list in popularity no matter the timing.
If he was in the class of 89 then he would be in the C category. Popular but not star level.
