Jamey Johnson
He started hot but never could get out of his own way. Now he just comes off as a whiney bitch blaming everyone else for his problems.

Seriously? He's one of the most versatile and successful American musicians ever. I used to watch his TV show all the time; he did a really good job of hiding his addiction issues. That, itself, took serious talent.
ETA: does anybody remember when Kenny Rogers was a stoner?

Most wasted talent would have to be Evan felker from turnpike troubadours.

Whitley is the definition of talent wasted
Still think Miley Cyrus is wasting her time trying to be a pop star.....she is wasting a truly unique country/bluegrass voice

He was credited with getting Tanya Tucker started doing cocaine when she was 15 or so. Frick Glen Campbell and his perfect hair

He also slapped Tanya Tucker but she countered with a punch to the face, Campbell's head hit the table and left his face bloody. It is a good thing that he stayed with the music industry, a boxer he is not.

Gram was only 27 when he OD'ed... he was incredibly talented and it showed in such a relatively short time... We'll never know what he could have contributed over the last 45 or so years... such a waste..

I'm not a big country fan at all but it seemed dwight yoakam might have something going on and then it just sorta fizzled out.

Dwight Yoakam has sold over 25 million records. He isn't as legendary as his mentor Buck Owens or other country legends but his body of work is very solid.
I think maybe the reason that he wasn't as popular is that his music was the Bakersfield sound. I don't believe Nashville ever promoted or wanted to accept a city that could rival them. Thus it put them as outlaws.
Another reason is that the 90s brought a new wave of artists and the competition was fierce. If he came up today, he would be at the top no doubt a bout it.
