David Lee Roth’s vocals married so well with Eddie’s guitar work. One minus the other is a weaker product.

Important, but pale to Eddie’s guitar.

Eddie created a one-of-a-kind guitar with settings on his amp that sparked a generation of new kinds of instruments and amplifiers, so absolutely Eddie.

Sorry - only taking serious questions today.

Having said that, anyone who thinks Van Halen was about anything other than EVH (whether he was on guitar or keys) would be difficult to educate.

Anthony's vocals were great. Alex was a great drummer. DLR was a great frontman (clownish, buffoonish, but great for that band at that time in that scene).

Take EVH out of the band - nobody heard of them. Put EVH into a talented but unsung band of the era, that band becomes an instant platinum seller, groundbreaking, legendary rock outfit.

Saying EVH was a transformative, revolutionary, one-of-a-kind talent (similar, really, only to Jimi Hendrix in influence and scope of his impact as a guitar player) is almost an understatement.

The Peavey 5150 and the guitar.

Roth made a career off of Eddie's guitar. Not saying he wasn't a talented person, but..when we think of Van Halen..its the guitar.

Dave had as much to do w Van Halen’s sound as Robert Plant did for Zeppelin. Not saying DLR is in RP’s league as a straight up singer, but without Diamond Dave, Van Halen is just... clear Pepsi

DLR’s signature shrieks or screams or whatever you want to call them were also big for their sound and unmistakably his.

It is EVH for sure. MA could definitely sing his arse off. What gets lost is EVH's part of the harmonies. He was really good. I saw them after they brought Wolf in and I really expected the backing vocals to take a big hit, but it was a lot better than I expected. Not nearly as good as with MA, but still pretty good. EVH could sing.

DLR is just a disaster. He is fine on the recordings for what they were doing, but he has been subpar live since back in the day. Just a bad singer.

IMO when I think about Van Halen I think about the sound of Michael Anthony and Eddie Van Halen‘s incredible backing vocals and harmonies.

Definitely much better with DLR. No comparison.

But, without Eddie, VH is stale urine.
